  • BYP 126 - [Influence] How Bartenders Use Social Proof to Salt the Jar and Score Tips

    31/07/2017 Duración: 13min

On Friday nights, I often catch up with friends in Alphabet City, a neighborhood in the East Village of New York City. One of our favorite spots is a bar called Fat Buddha. We’re regulars, so we’ve gotten to know the bartenders. One night I got I in early before the night crowd strolled in. The crew was still getting setup and I noticed Shannon, one of bartenders, put out a tip jar … then add her own money to it. Ever the marketer, I asked Shannon why she did that. She said it was to “salt” the jar — to give people the impression that tipping with folded bills is proper behavior at their fine establishment. This is the third law of influence: social proof. • BYP 125 - [Influence] The Little Known Secret of Catapulting Sales with Reverse Commitment

    24/07/2017 Duración: 16min

Years ago, a study showed that just after placing a bet, people felt much more confident about their horse’s chance of winning than they did just prior to making the bet. Obviously, their bet doesn't actually change the chances of that horse winning. The jockey, horse, track, weather ... none of it is impacted at all… So why the spike in confidence? It has to do with commitment & consistency, which is the second law of influence that we cover in this episode of the podcast. Influence has been the magic ingredient to my success - both in business and in life. Today, I kick off a series on the topic of influence. Each episode will contain some practical tips for your marketing, and a story or two from my own life where I've seen these factors at play. In this episode, I cover the topic of reciprocity. • BYP 119 - These 7 Principles of Essentialism Transformed My Life

    30/05/2017 Duración: 22min

I, Mike Kim, am an opportunity junkie. While leveraging opportunities has contributed greatly to my success, it's become really apparent that I need a different approach to business and life. These 7 principles from Greg McKeown's book Essentialism have helped me make difficult decisions in the past few weeks: 1. We can make one-time decisions that make a thousand future decisions so we don’t exhaust ourselves asking the same questions again and again. 2. Be aware of decision fatigue: the more choices we are forced to make, the more the quality of our decisions deteriorates. 3. Priority is singular. The word priority came into the English language in the 1400s. It meant the very first or prior thing. Only in the 1900s did we pluralize the term and start talking about priorities. Somehow we would now be able to have multiple “first” things 4. To eliminate nonessentials means saying no to someone, often. It means pushing against social expectations. Eliminating the nonessentials isn’t just about mental discipli

  • BYP 118 - 5 Keys To Creating Max Impact When Speaking

    23/05/2017 Duración: 18min

The key to delivering a successful speech or workshop involves more than just content. Presentation is vital. But any professional communicator knows there are a myriad of external factors that affect you and the audience's ability to engage with you: lighting, room layout, ambient noise, time of day, and more. In today's episode, I outline 5 things I do to manage these external factors so I can serve my audience in the best way possible: Survey the room Sit in the worst seat in the room Optimize my slides Set the rules of engagement Wear the right clothes You can also see a real-world walkthrough of how I did this before speaking at Ernie Svenson's Small Firm Bootcamp in New Orleans: https://youtu.be/zYeGmlN9Tds Join the Brand You Community on Facebook: Have you checked out this invite-only group? Click here to request access to the Brand You Community Liked this episode? • BYP 117 - 4 Questions That Actually Kill Confusion and Lead to Clarity

    08/05/2017 Duración: 17min

The key to clarity lies in asking the right questions. In today's episode, I share 4 questions that I learned from Michael Hudson on a recent consulting trip. Michael uses these questions when journaling every morning, and he recommended I try them out. In the days since I started asking (and answering) these questions, my clarity and focus have sharpened like never before. Michael is a well-respected consultant who also helps experts create impact with their ideas and get their message heard. I highly recommend his podcast, Get Your Message Heard. It's terrific.
