  • Followers - Finding it difficult to execute lady's styling while dancing with a partner.

    31/08/2022 Duración: 03min

Followers - Finding it difficult to execute lady's styling while dancing with a partner. This Follower who has been taking ladies styling both in-person and online is able to execute ladies styling solo.  However, whenever she dances with a partner she finds it very challenging to incorporate the steps she’s learning in the lady's styling courses Thoughts? / Help?     The majority of styling classes will only teach you solo styling. And while some of that can be incorporated into partner work, don't expect heaps of wiggle room. When dancing with a leader you're pretty stuck to what they want to do first, and styling comes second. Lady's styling can be completely inhibited by the leader. Lady's styling is somewhat dependent on the leader’s skill level. If the leader gives you the freedom to move, perfect. If the leader has a vice grip on your hands? Not perfect.   In salsa there are more 'solo' parts where leaders and followers break apart and start doing shines, in bachata/Kizomba/B-Zouk, to my experience, th

  • Some ways to recover after a night of dancing?

    24/08/2022 Duración: 02min

Some ways to recover after a night of dancing? Muscles are still sore days after This individual went to a festival and danced for 3 days straight, and is now sore from all the dancing.   They wanted to know what can they do before and after to help minimize the soreness?   In the exercise and weightlifting community, we call this DOMS. Delayed onset muscle soreness. It means you're pushing yourself and getting stronger! The best thing to do is to eat well, rest, and continue training. DOMS should stop occurring as your body gets used to the level of work. So stay hydrated, massage the sore areas, and stay active. Spending a couple of hours a couple of times a week social dancing shouldn't be too much for your body to get used to.   Try drinking water before, during, and after dancing. You might be sweating your hydration away. You could also bring electrolyte water or Gatorade to drink throughout the night.   One of the best things you can do is light exercise the day after. Legs are easy because you can

    19/08/2022 Duración: 07min

Insecurities on the Dance Floor?   I am not good enough I will never be as good as X person   How to deal with your insecurities? 1.Why I made this video? TO discuss Insecurities This is something we all deal with in all facets of our lives. I will tailor this to the dancing scene. 2. I have often found myself thinking: I am not good enough I will never be as good as X person 3. How I would aim to resolve these issues: Ask yourself what is In your control? What do you have power over? Your Actions. Also understand that comparison is the thief of joy.   I would also like to say that, your insecurities are something you will always deal with. But as you become more confident and as you put the time and effort into your craft, you build up this level of trust & confidence within yourself. And I also think you start to build this sense of abudance mentality versus scarcity. For me I had this sense of scarcity mindset, thinking   The more you do this, the better you become, and the more positive experiences yo

  • What do followers look for in a good lead ?

    17/08/2022 Duración: 04min

What do followers look for in a good lead ?   As a leader it is your job to protect the follow. People on the sideline see everything, so you want to be more protective in a crowded dance floor.  When people see that you are safe to dance with, you get more dances.   I do believe that when surveying a dance floor people can recognize with someone is smiling politely, vs. actually and truly having an amazing time. A genuine smile vs a fake smile.   If a lead can make a follower truly smile and have fun, then hes probably a good lead.   Understand that as a lead when you are dancing you are visually showing everyone your dance resume. People on the sidelines are watching: your moves -  are you leading an advanced move at the intro with a new dancer, or are you paying attention to musicality and trying out basic moves first to test the connection and her skill level?   Are you leading three double spins in a row? Does the follower look like she's anticipating and/or backleading? If so, how is the lead handling t

  • Can I social Dance if I am overweight ?

    10/08/2022 Duración: 06min

I am Conscious to go social dancing due to being overweight This person was conscious because they believe that only the skinny and good looking followers get asked to dance.   Being Overweight, does not mean you cannot be a good dancer. I know plenty of plus sized dancers who are absolutely fabulous on the dance floor. I also know plenty of in shape people who are terrible dancers. Your weight should not hinder your desire to learn if you are feeling insecure that also brings your energy down and makes you retreat into yourself so you end up not enjoying the dance as much and perhaps giving off nervous and uncomfortable energy. Giving off that energy can make people hesitant to approach you and ask you to dance. And this can turn into a vicious feedback loop. The good news, perhaps, is that it’s something you can change over time. The key is being a fun partner, and that has nothing to do with your weight and more to do with your attitude. It is all about attitude. It does not matter how hot/fit/pretty you

  • What should be taught in a Beginner Class?

    03/08/2022 Duración: 03min

What moves and in which order should I teach my friends?   proper technique is the best gift you can give your friends. having to unlearn bad habits, can be very difficult and very dishearting.   There is a youtube Channel Called salsaventura. He has something he calls the six turn system. He explains that 80% of moves are based on six techniques (inside, outside, cross body inside/outside, enchufla, reverse cross body). You can do those turns with different handholds (single, both hands, handshake hold, right above, left above). In theory understanding this gets you 30 different moves. Then as a lead you can learn to do all the turns yourself to give the follow a break. I think that’s the best way for beginners to get going.   After that I think you could learn cuddle position, hammerlock, copa, around the world. I think that’s a solid intermediate dancer if you know all those things.   Also definitely add in some safety tips (peripheral vision, Safety is the responsibility of the leader, dance in your box o

  • what is your biggest turn off in social dancing?

    27/07/2022 Duración: 08min

what is your biggest turn off in social dancing? For me it’s “dead eyes”. Dead, unengaged eyes. The look of somebody who is completely uninterested and completely bored with the dance. This can be very disheartening to your partner, if you visually look bored/apathetic/disinterested in the dance. Backleading. As either role, feeling their thumbs, esp if they’re squeezing. There are some handholds that allow for feeling thumbs, but the newbies squeeze. If you know, you know. As a lead. It's very challenging when the follow has the tension and frame of a wet noodle. A great frame is light-medium with elasticity (think like a rubber band). On the opposite end of the spectrum. The worst experience for followers is usually very soft leads. When there is zero tension or direction, and then follow is forced to back lead because they completely directionless otherwise. Some of the best advice ive heard for followers is that. If a follower is not sure what the lead is asking, They should do nothing (or just continue t

  • Should I learn Salsa and Bachata at the same time?

    20/07/2022 Duración: 03min

Should I learn Salsa and Bachata at the same time? I recommend it. In my experience people who often wait too long to start learning the other dance at the social often end up not learning it and just sitting on the sidelines when all the other songs play. It may be slightly more overwhelming at the beginning, but not too much and your brain will adjust quickly. I had two left feet when I started dancing, and while I did struggle a bit initially I am now super grateful that I stuck with both dances from the beginning. Salsa and Bachata are pretty much played at each other’s respective socials now. And even when you eventually go to congresses, they’ll most likely have both Salsa and Bachata. If your scene is large enough you may find socials that only do specific dances but most likely your scene is smaller and they will play everything. One thing that helps, a ton of bachata moves translate pretty easily to salsa. The more dances you learn, the better a dancer you’ll become. It’s like learning new dialects i

  • How to Prevent Boring Dances

    13/07/2022 Duración: 06min

I feel like I bore the followers I dance with. He has been dancing for 3 months. When he is social dancing he runs out of dance moves. How can he make the dance more interesting for the follow? Followers should understand that everyone was a beginner at some point. A lot of follows do not care about how many skills you know, as long as you’re both having fun! If your face looks bored, then it's hard to enjoy. If you're enjoying the dance, so is the follow. Sometimes it's really nice to have a dance with more beginner moves, after you had a couple of advanced dances. The follows need time to breath. Don't worry, keep dancing and HAVE FUN. A lot of beginners believe that it is the amount of patters you know that separates dancers. In my opinion this is not true. People will do 4 or 5 things and just add variations on top of it so it looks and feels different. The pro tip is to focus a lot more on musicality and less on moves; people can appreciate when they see that you are interpreting the song instead of jus
