  • Southern Ground | Tagged Out: 2018 Rutcation Recap

    14/12/2018 Duración: 01h09min

Thank you for tuning in to the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. This week Parker and his buddy Cody Phillips are recapping one of the best “Rutcation” hunting trips that Parker has had the opportunity to take. Parker and his dad loaded up the kayaks, the bass tracker, and their camping gear last week, in hopes of getting on two respectable Alabama public land bucks. Everything fell perfectly into place, the stars aligned, and they completed their goals. Parker goes into detail about the tactics that were used, and how he believes that using “beast” tactics is what killed these bucks. These two bucks are a great testament to the phrase “Hard Work Pays Off”. Pre Season scouting, cyber scouting with OnX, & knowing the right time to be in the woods is imperative to being successful on high pressured public land. You can get lucky every once in a while, but to consistently kill good bucks is truly something that takes a lot of dedication. Hopefully this podcast inspires and motivates you to get out there and m

  • Southern Ground | Mid Season Update & Preparing For The Rut

    30/11/2018 Duración: 01h17min

Welcome to the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast and thanks for tuning in! On this episode, Parker and Michael are recapping their Alabama seasons so far, and discussing the realities of hunting on public land. The season has been very different for both Parker & Michael. They go into detail about some of the expectations they had going into the season, and how they have evolved as the season has progressed. Hunting on public land is a different ball game. Not only do you have to outsmart the deer, but you also have to outsmart other hunters. It’s a harsh reality, but it’s what makes you keep coming back for more. As the rut gets closer, Parker and Mike talk about their preparations to make the most of this magical time of year. The morning of this recording, Parker shot a buck that was showing definite signs of a rutting whitetail. You’re not only going to get to hear the story of this buck, but also what he plans to do with that intel to help him make the most of his last remaining buck tag. Topics Discus

    02/11/2018 Duración: 01h31min

We’re pumped that you’re listening to the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. This is normally the part of the write up where we would tell you about something really strategic that we learned about hunting southern whitetails. However, that’s not the case with this one. In this episode we’re just hanging out at deer camp with our friends from The Southern Outdoorsmen. We talk about the challenges that we faced during the week on some very highly pressured public land, and some of our plans to work around all of the pressure. Other than that, it’s just a bunch of worn out hunting buddies shooting the bull, swapping hunting stories, & telling a bunch of lies. We’ve got a lot of great video content coming down the pipe so make sure you’re subscribed to the Sportsmen’s Nation channel on YouTube to keep up with it. Topics Discussed: High Pressure Public Land Mike’s side gig as a stripper Tyler has a weak stomach Jacob & Parker start the “Pocket Deer Club” Swamp Buck Bedding Applications: Life is better when

    19/10/2018 Duración: 01h25min

Thank you for tuning in to the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast, your source for whitetail hunting stories and tactics in the south. This week we are diving deep into the subject of thermal winds, and how they can be used to maximize your time in the woods. Thermals are not something you would normally hear discussed in depth, but for us they have completely revolutionized the way that we hunt. We invited a fellow TheHuntingBeast.com member and Alabama native, Nathan Protz, on the show to discuss how he has learned to use thermals to determine his hunting locations on public land, as well as how he sees deer use thermals in their bedding and travel patterns. This was an especially fun episode because Parker had some public land kayak hunting success on the archery opener in Alabama the day before we recorded. This was his first day hunting from the new Tethrd Mantis saddle, and the first blood drawn with the New Breed Archery GX2. If you like a good DIY public land hunting story, you’ll enjoy hearing about thi

  • Southern Ground | Kentucky Public Land Recap

    21/09/2018 Duración: 01h37min

In this Southern Ground podcast, we’re recapping our first hunt of the season in Kentucky. Even though we came home successful, it doesn’t mean that it was an easy trip. Sometimes bad things will inevitably happen, and this trip was no exception. We’re going to talk about those tough moments, as well as the high points of the trip, and breakdown what we learned from our mistakes. Hunting out of state can be a huge learning curve, especially on public land. Hopefully you’ll be able to hear our story, learn from our mistakes, and be successful on your next out of state hunt! This trip was also documented on our YouTube vlog on the Sportsmen’s Nation channel. We would love it if you would check that out and subscribe to the channel. Deer season has officially kicked off… well for some anyways! This week’s episode we’re talking with Ben Harrison about his recent success in Tennessee on a great velvet buck. Now, this was the first ever velvet hunt in Tennessee so there were some obvious challenges that Ben talks about. However, he accepted the challenge, made a game plan, and ended up arrowing the buck he was after. I think you’re going to enjoy this awesome success story. We also got the opportunity to have Brad Luttrell, of GoWild, co-hosting with Parker during the intro. It’s always a pleasure to speak with Brad, and this week we announced how you can have a chance to win a $100 credit in the GoWild store during the month of September. In the south you have deer hunters, and then you have legends like Michael & Kat Perry. We got the opportunity to sit down with them, surrounded by over 20 years worth of hunting memories, and hear some stories, strategies and tactics they have used to run their taxidermy bill up each and every year. Not only does Michael have a large collection of public land bucks on the wall, he’s also kept a detailed journal of every hunt from 1988 to now. It’s surreal as you read through his public land encounters throughout the years, and even more impressive that he can tell you the location and date of almost every single successful hunt in the journal. Thanks for tuning into Southern Ground. Enjoy the show!

    15/06/2018 Duración: 01h08min

Thanks for tuning into the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast! On this special Father’s Day episode we are talking to the guys that first ignited the passion for the outdoors in us. Some know them as Brian Echols and Randall McDonald, but we know them simply as Dad. These two legends talk about how and why they made the decision a long time ago to take their kids hunting and fishing, in hopes that maybe it will inspire listeners to do the same. Prepare to laugh at some of our father/son hunting debacles, and get ready for some… misty eyed moments. Whatever your emotional outlet may be, we hope that you enjoy this episode. We sure did. Happy Father’s Day!

  • Southern Ground | Kayak Hunting 101

    01/06/2018 Duración: 01h36min

We have never been more excited to share an episode as much as we are with this one. This week Parker and Blake are talking all about using a kayak to access hard to reach places on public land. Living in the south, it’s very hard to compete with the amount of pressure that most pieces of public land are receiving. We share why we think the kayak method is the best method to beat the pressure in your area, and in some cases use it to your advantage. You are going to hear us talk about our kayak setups and strategies, and hopefully you will be inspired to try it for yourself. Some people think you can’t have a true backcountry adventure without heading west. We beg to differ. Your adventure is what you make it, and for us, this is how we do it.

  • Southern Ground | GoWild with Brad Luttrell

    18/05/2018 Duración: 01h17min

This week we are talking to Kentucky native, Brad Luttrell, about a new social media platform he has designed for outdoorsmen, GoWild. Brad is a passionate entrepreneur, die hard outdoorsmen, and a genius behind the grill. The majority of our conversation is focused on Go Wild, but when Brad starts talking about cooking wild game, it’s tough to get him to stop! It’s also good to have Blake back from his paternity leave. We have definitely missed having him and his southern twang, and I may or may not have written and performed a song I wrote just for Blake on this episode. Welcome back, Blake. Southern Ground has missed you!

  • Southern Ground | Public Land Spring Scouting with Michael Pike

    04/05/2018 Duración: 01h28min

Thank you for tuning into the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. This week, we’re diving straight into spring scouting on public land with my good friend, Michael Pike. With the lack of agriculture in the south, it can be difficult to pinpoint where these whitetails live, especially on high pressured public land. Michael tells us how he has been able to use terrain and natural food sources to figure out where these big bucks are hanging out in the spring. Topics discussed: bedding, natural browse, bedding, and ground temperature. If you’re a hardcore hunter, you’re not going to want to miss this episode.

  • Southern Ground | All About OnX Maps

    20/04/2018 Duración: 01h14min

This week’s episode is a little bit different than our normal show because we got the opportunity to talk to two different people. First, we talk to Dylan Dowson from OnX Hunt. Dylan gave us an overhead view (pun intended) of what exactly OnX is and how this mapping system can be used to give us a great advantage in the woods. If you’re not an OnX user yet, I bet this convo will get you closer to making the plunge. We also talked to Chris Rice, a fellow southern whitetail hunter, about how he used OnX to give him the upper hand this past season on some really nice public land whitetails in Alabama. Chris walks us through some of his strategies and how OnX became one of the greatest tools on his gear list. If Dylan didn’t convince you, I think Chris will. Enjoy!

  • Southern Ground | Public Land Turkey Hunting with The Hunting Public

    06/04/2018 Duración: 01h09min

This week we are thrilled to get to talk to the guys over at The Hunting Public while they were down in Alabama in search of public land turkeys. Aaron, Zach & Brody (aka Corndog) talked with us about some of the tactics they used, and what ultimately led to success on their first stop of Turkey Tour 2018. We definitely talked strategy, but we’re no strangers to just sitting around and shootin’ the bull! There’s no shortage of that in this episode. This is also a huge episode for us because we had the opportunity to talk about our new partnership with OnX Hunt. We’re absolutely stoked to get to work with this great company and we know that only great things will come from it. To celebrate, we’re giving away 3 Premium membership cards and 1 Elite membership card. Woodhaven Custom Calls has also been generous enough to give us 2 Ninja Hammer calls & 1 Cluck n’ Purr pot that we are excited to give away as well. Listen to this episode and check out our Facebook page to find out how you can win!
