Parker goes into detail about the tactics that were used, and how he believes that using “beast” tactics is what killed these bucks. They go into detail about some of the expectations they had going into the season, and how they have evolved as the season has progressed. Hunting on public land is a different ball game. Not only do you have to outsmart the deer, but you also have to outsmart other hunters. It’s a harsh reality, but it’s what makes you keep coming back for more. In this Southern Ground podcast, we’re recapping our first hunt of the season in Kentucky. Even though we came home successful, it doesn’t mean that it was an easy trip. Sometimes bad things will inevitably happen, and this trip was no exception. We’re going to talk about those tough moments, as well as the high points of the trip, and breakdown what we learned from our mistakes. Deer season has officially kicked off… well for some anyways! This week’s episode we’re talking with Ben Harrison about his recent success in Tennessee on a great velvet buck. Now, this was the first ever velvet hunt in Tennessee so there were some obvious challenges that Ben talks about. However, he accepted the challenge, made a game plan, and ended up arrowing the buck he was after. I think you’re going to enjoy this awesome success story. In the south you have deer hunters, and then you have legends like Michael & Kat Perry. They’re almost in a division of their own when it comes to hunting public land in Alabama, and their gigantic trophy room backs that up. We got the opportunity to sit down with them, surrounded by over 20 years worth of hunting memories, and hear some stories, strategies and tactics they have used to run their taxidermy bill up each and every year. Not only does Michael have a large collection of public land bucks on the wall, he’s also kept a detailed journal of every hunt from 1988 to now. It’s surreal as you read through his public land encounters throughout the years, and even more impressive that he can tell you the location and date of almost every single successful hunt in the journal. We have never been more excited to share an episode as much as we are with this one. This week Parker and Blake are talking all about using a kayak to access hard to reach places on public land. Living in the south, it’s very hard to compete with the amount of pressure that most pieces of public land are receiving. We share why we think the kayak method is the best method to beat the pressure in your area, and in some cases use it to your advantage. We also talked to Chris Rice, a fellow southern whitetail hunter, about how he used OnX to give him the upper hand this past season on some really nice public land whitetails in Alabama.
