Hunting BIG BUCKS in BIG WOODS with Michael Perry & Jamie McCay
31/01/2020 Duración: 01h36minThis week on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast ep. 64, we're joined by two returning guests, Jamie McCay and Michael Perry. Both of these Alabama public land hunters are notorious in their area for consistently killing larger than average mature bucks in places where most people are lucky to see a spike. This season was no different. Michael and Jamie both tagged out with 3 wall hangers, having what could only be considered a dream season. The crazy thing is, for these guys it's not a matter of "if they kill big bucks this year", it's "when they kill big bucks this year"... every year. We've had so much feedback from both of these guys episodes in the past that we decided we needed to get them on the show together to break down and compare their process for finding and hunting these deer in high pressure, low deer density areas. In this episode you'll find out their scouting process, trail camera strategies, how they're finding a bucks core area, and likely the best information you've ever heard on hunting

"X Marks The Spot" | Putting Yourself In The Right Position To Kill Big Bucks with Matt Powell
24/01/2020 Duración: 01h26minWe're especially excited about episode 63. Parker is talking with an absolute buck killer, Matt Powell. Matt has started to build a reputation of killing mature bucks consistently in multiple states, year after year. In fact, this season he has killed 5 bucks with a total of 710 inches of antler on the ground! When a guy is being as consistent as Matt, eventually we all have to realize that he's not just lucky. Matt talks with Parker about what he does to put himself in the right position to kill big bucks on a regular basis. From spending time scouting aerial maps at home, post season scouting, running cameras, and just spending a lot of time in a tree each season, there are a lot of things that Matt says have attributed to his success. In this episode, you'll get to hear Matt go into deep detail on many of the things he's doing to put arrows in bucks in multiple states, year after year. The State Of The Hunting Union
17/01/2020 Duración: 01h24minWe interrupt your regularly scheduled tactics based podcast to bring you an important message. In episode 62, we're talking about Parker's observations at the ATA show in Indy. While the hunting industry is full of great products and people, there is an ugly side of it. How do we change it? Is there even a solution? There is no doubt a decline in license sales, and hunter recruitment is at an all time low. Parker and Drew talk about some things that can be done to change the current climate within the hunting community. It takes an army, but it starts with YOU. This podcast is quite different from what the guys normally talk about, but it's important for all of us to remember that we have a responsibility to preserve our lifestyle. We all love to shoot big bucks, but at the end of the day it's about more than that. How can we change this culture? Well, here's what we think... Southern Ground Hunting is powered by Simple Cast

Reaping The Rewards of Staying Mobile with Nick Williams
03/01/2020 Duración: 01h24minWelcome to the Southern Ground Hunting podcast. Thanks for joining! On Episode 60, we're joined by Nick Williams, aka. Nutterbuster, talking about an Alabama public land SOA hunt he went on last week. During this hunt, Nick and his dad both killed personal best bucks, and it wasn't just coincidence. Nick tells us about how he scouted the area with a limited amount of time allowed. Not only that, but it was months before his hunt actually took place. With deer patterns constantly changing from early season to fall and fall to winter, this made them have to adapt to the situation and stay mobile to find the deer. We discuss his equipment, strategies, and mindset going into the hunt. The last two weeks, Nick has been on a deer killing spree. In fact, he just sat down to record after dragging another one out of the woods! Listen closely to this episode, as there are some things discussed that you'll need to engrave into your mind as a deer hunter! Southern Ground Hunting is powered by Simple Cast

Texas Hog Dog Knife Stickin' Recap
27/12/2019 Duración: 53minThis episode was a little wild! Parker got to come home to Texas for the holidays. Him, his dad & brother-in-law sat down to recap a hog hunt they all went on earlier this week, using a knife as the main weapon. Parker describes the experience in full detail. The wild pig epidemic across the south is nothing to joke about, and Texas holds the highest population of feral hogs in the US. These critters are causing farmers and ranchers millions of dollars in damage and there are only a few proven methods of keeping the population in check. One of them... using dogs. The guys talk about the differences in this style of hunting vs. what they're used to doing. Is a hog different than a deer? Should I feel okay with stabbing something? Should you respect one species of animal more than another? These are all questions that are discussed in episode 59. Thanks for listening! Southern Ground Hunting is powered by Simple Cast

Rutcation, Hunter Ethics, Hunting Mobile on Private
20/12/2019 Duración: 58minIn episode 58, the guys are catching up about a week full of hunting the rut in Alabama. Drew spent most of his time with his old man hunting private land, while Parker and his dad were being poor and hunting public land. This was the best rut Parker has ever seen on public land in Alabama, and even managed to put a buck on the ground. Drew had a great encounter with a buck on private land, hunting an overlooked area on his club. Through the convo Parker gets on a soapbox about hunter ethics on public land. Rut Strategies, Hunting Hard Edges, & Drew Using Backstrap for Jerky
06/12/2019 Duración: 01h16minWelcome back to the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. In episode 57, Drew and I are talking about our season to this point. Drew finally got some meat in the freezer this week that wasn't killed with his Toyota. The only questionable thing is that he used one of the best cuts of meat... for jerky! Your loss, Drew. I get to share the heartbreaking story of my first Alabama rifle hunt of the season. I'll talk about the lessons learned and why I think it happened, but then I go into talking about the area I'm hunting. This year has been the year of opportunity for me. I've no doubt seen more deer than ever before, and in this episode I'm narrowing down the reasons why I think this is happening. In a nutshell... transitions, hard edges, funnels & pines have all played a huge part. Drew and I discuss these strategies and how we will apply them going into the Alabama rut. Enjoy! The conversation revolves around the difficulty of this state and who better to talk to than my friend, and host of the Chasing Tales Outdoors Podcast, Walter. Luke's Big Buck Breakdown
22/11/2019 Duración: 01h37sOn episode 55, I’m talking with Drew and Luke about how our season has gone to this point. Lucky for us, everyone in this episode put some meat in the freezer this week! Drew’s wasn’t quite what he was looking for, but it’s venison nonetheless. We’re going to start off with the story about the doe that I shot with my bow on a newer chunk of public land. From the way I chose the area, to the shot, to the tracking dog debacle that ensued in the wee hours of the morning. Luke had some success this weekend as well on a big Alabama buck that he’s been after all season. Thanks to modern technology in game cameras & some quick research on how to make a mock scrape, Luke was able to run an arrow through this big boy. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did! 15/11/2019 Duración: 01h47minThanks for listening to episode 54! This week we’re giving you something a little bit different. I recently got to be a guest on the Smackdown Outdoors Podcast with Doug Glimmerveen. Our conversation was so much fun that I just wanted to share it with all of you! We talk a lot about some of the adversity that we face as outdoorsmen, and some of the ways we can fix them. In this day and age, it can be tough to be a hunter. Doug and I address those issues, but take the responsibility on ourselves for the resolution. I think you’ll enjoy this!Southern Ground Hunting is powered by Simplecast

North Georgia Mountain Bucks with Jonah Abraham
01/11/2019 Duración: 01h04minThis week’s episode is focused around chasing mature bucks in the mountain country of North Georgia. I’m joined by my new friend Jonah Abraham, and we’re discussing his strategies for being successful in this steep terrain. Jonah just recently switched to hunting solely on public land and has worked hard to figure out these mountain bucks. We discuss their bedding, travel and food sources in the areas that seem difficult to pinpoint. We also talk about his main strategy of hunting in overlooked areas. It’s Not “Grinding” If Everything Goes Right
25/10/2019 Duración: 01h10minEpisode 51 is one of those that every podcast host dreams about recording. We talk to big buck killers on most episodes, hear their awesome stories, but are always left wondering if we’re ever going to get to tell our big buck story. Okay so that’s a stretch. However, today I get the opportunity to tell you the story about my biggest buck ever. Drew and I got to sit down on the afternoon of the same day I shot this buck and talk about how it happened. It’s no secret that this has been a tough start to a season for me. I’ve missed 4 deer and really struggled to have any mature buck encounters. The start of this hunt was no different! Several circumstances led me to going in blind to a new area that I really didn’t want to go to. We’re going to break down the whole story and the events that led up to my biggest bow kill to date. Make sure you’re subscribed to the Sportsmen’s Nation YouTube channel to watch the video of this hunt as soon as it comes out! Thanks for listening!

3 Florida Public Land Bucks In Two Weeks
17/10/2019 Duración: 01h04minWe finally made it to 50 episodes!!! Thanks for sticking with us this long. Today we’re talking to Nick Chandler from Central Florida. Nick has had a heck of a start to his season, taking 3 bucks on public land all in the month of September. We talk all about the things that he thinks put him in the right places throughout his hunts, including things like in season scouting, transition areas, staying mobile, and other tactics. I’ve said for the last year, a guy that can kill legal bucks in Florida consistently is likely among some of the best hunters in the nation. Take notes on this one! Nick is a name that I bet you’ll hear from more and more in the future. As Nick tells the story of his bucks, we get to the last story of the third buck of his season. A mature buck that would be Nick’s first submission to the Florida buck registry. This is a buck that he has been after for a couple of years. All self-filmed, Nick arrowed this buck in late September only to find that someone else picked up his buck where it h

Should Parker Stop Shooting Small Bucks?
04/10/2019 Duración: 01h18minOnce upon a time, in a land far away called Alabama, there lived a deer hunting podcast host who got fired up about absolutely every deer that ever walked by his tree… yeah… I’m talking about myself! If you’ve ever watched a Southern Ground video or seen a “trophy pic”, you know that I’m not afraid to let loose on a small buck. However, something MIGHT have switched in me this week after missing a small buck on public land in Tennessee. In this episode, I’m joined by my buddies Luke & Drew, and we’re just talking it out. You’ll have to take a listen to this episode to learn our conclusions, but in a nutshell, we decide that if it gets you fired up, shoot it! This was one of the funniest conversations, but also one of the most beneficial episodes for a hunting culture that doesn’t know how to agree on almost anything. At the end of the day, we have to be united as outdoorsmen & women if we ever want to see our sport survive the current political climate.I hope you’ll take a listen (and maybe laugh at o

Confessions Of A Deer Season Widow
27/09/2019 Duración: 51minOn this week’s episode, we have a special treat for you! My wife, Hali, is joining the show. She’s going to give her perspective of deer season, that truthfully could be the most important information we’ve ever shared on this podcast. Is it possible to have a happy marriage AND be able to prioritize hunting season? The answer put simply, yes. It is possible, but it doesn’t come without a lot of hard work and COMMUNICATION. We admittedly do not have it all figured out. There are still those days when it’s just not working. However, making an effort to get it figured out has been one of the smartest moves I’ve ever made, both as a deer hunter and husband/father. This is normally a tactics based podcast. We cover a wide range of topics that we feel can add to your success in the woods. I’m adding this episode into the tactical category, because for me, it has given me the ability to focus on what’s important in life, as well as prioritize my life as a public land hunter. If this is something you’ve been dealin

Early Season Public Land Strategies
20/09/2019 Duración: 01h22minThis week we’re recapping the recent trip that Parker took to Kentucky, hunting public land velvet bucks with a bow. Drew Robbins & Jared Shaffer join the conversation, talking about some of the tactics and strategies that were used to kill 2 velvet bucks on the trip. If you’ve been following Southern Ground, you know that Parker has struggled to find success in Kentucky. This year was no different! However, he was able to make things happen on his first velvet buck. Jared talks about his quick success and what he thinks led him to take his buck early in the trip. The guys talk about food sources, hunting pressure, bedding and a lot more things that need to be considered when hunting in early September on public land. Both Parker & Jared’s videos from their trip can be found on YouTube. Make sure you’re subscribed to the Sportsmen’s Nation channel, where you can find the Kentucky series, as well as a lot of other great hunting content. Bucks Of Seasons Past
13/09/2019 Duración: 01h24minThis week on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast, Parker & Drew are reminiscing on some of their greatest memories in the woods. The guys talk about successful hunts that really contributed to their passion for the outdoors now. It’s really important to look back on some of these great days in the field, and start piecing together the tactics that maybe you didn’t even know were put into play back then. Now, looking back, we can see why these bucks were in this spot at the time we pulled the trigger. For every memory, Parker and Drew talk about some of these lessons that they learned, and how they apply to their hunting style today. Another interesting thing about this episode is that the guys were raised in totally different hunting cultures. Drew came from Florida, where hunting with dogs is a way of life. He talks about how that shaped his hunting style, and also lit a passion inside of him for deer hunting. Parker talks about being raised in West Texas, where corn feeders are a main food source for de

Hunting Mature Bucks In Public Land Swamps with Dave Owens
06/09/2019 Duración: 01h25minWelcome to the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast, and thank you for tuning in. This week we’re talking with Dave Owens of the Pinhoti Project. If you’ve followed Dave’s YouTube channel, you probably know that he is a die hard turkey hunter. What you may not know is that he actually cut his teeth in the outdoors hunting southern whitetails. He and Parker discuss how he navigates and breaks down the swampy Alabama public land areas he hunts, how he scouts it, and then how he executes a hunt. They talk about different food sources that he has found the most success on, especially when it comes to mature bucks. We tend to put human characteristics on deer when it comes to food, but Dave helps us understand that what most hunters tend to believe about a deer’s feeding habits may be further from the truth than what we think. This is an incredible conversation that you can gain whitetail knowledge from regardless of the type terrain you hunt! While you’re following along with Dave’s channel, The Pinhoti Project, make
