This week on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast ep. 64, we're joined by two returning guests, Jamie McCay and Michael Perry. Both of these Alabama public land hunters are notorious in their area for consistently killing larger than average mature bucks in places where most people are lucky to see a spike. This season was no different. Michael and Jamie both tagged out with 3 wall hangers, having what could only be considered a dream season. The crazy thing is, for these guys it's not a matter of "if they kill big bucks this year", it's "when they kill big bucks this year"... every year. We've had so much feedback from both of these guys episodes in the past that we decided we needed to get them on the show together to break down and compare their process for finding and hunting these deer in high pressure, low deer density areas. We're especially excited about episode 63. Parker is talking with an absolute buck killer, Matt Powell. Matt has started to build a reputation of killing mature bucks consistently in multiple states, year after year. In fact, this season he has killed 5 bucks with a total of 710 inches of antler on the ground! When a guy is being as consistent as Matt, eventually we all have to realize that he's not just lucky. Matt talks with Parker about what he does to put himself in the right position to kill big bucks on a regular basis. From spending time scouting aerial maps at home, post season scouting, running cameras, and just spending a lot of time in a tree each season, there are a lot of things that Matt says have attributed to his success. Nutterbuster, talking about an Alabama public land SOA hunt he went on last week. During this hunt, Nick and his dad both killed personal best bucks, and it wasn't just coincidence. Nick tells us about how he scouted the area with a limited amount of time allowed. Not only that, but it was months before his hunt actually took place. With deer patterns constantly changing from early season to fall and fall to winter, this made them have to adapt to the situation and stay mobile to find the deer. This episode was a little wild! Parker got to come home to Texas for the holidays. Him, his dad & brother-in-law sat down to recap a hog hunt they all went on earlier this week, using a knife as the main weapon. Parker describes the experience in full detail. The wild pig epidemic across the south is nothing to joke about, and Texas holds the highest population of feral hogs in the US. These critters are causing farmers and ranchers millions of dollars in damage and there are only a few proven methods of keeping the population in check. One of them... using dogs. The guys talk about the differences in this style of hunting vs. what they're used to doing. Is a hog different than a deer? Should I feel okay with stabbing something? In episode 58, the guys are catching up about a week full of hunting the rut in Alabama. Drew spent most of his time with his old man hunting private land, while Parker and his dad were being poor and hunting public land. This was the best rut Parker has ever seen on public land in Alabama, and even managed to put a buck on the ground. Drew had a great encounter with a buck on private land, hunting an overlooked area on his club. Drew finally got some meat in the freezer this week that wasn't killed with his Toyota. The only questionable thing is that he used one of the best cuts of meat... for jerky! Your loss, Drew. On episode 55, I’m talking with Drew and Luke about how our season has gone to this point. Lucky for us, everyone in this episode put some meat in the freezer this week! Drew’s wasn’t quite what he was looking for, but it’s venison nonetheless. We’re going to start off with the story about the doe that I shot with my bow on a newer chunk of public land. From the way I chose the area, to the shot, to the tracking dog debacle that ensued in the wee hours of the morning. Luke had some success this weekend as well on a big Alabama buck that he’s been after all season. Thanks to modern technology in game cameras & some quick research on how to make a mock scrape, Luke was able to run an arrow through this big boy. Episode 51 is one of those that every podcast host dreams about recording. We talk to big buck killers on most episodes, hear their awesome stories, but are always left wondering if we’re ever going to get to tell our big buck story. Okay so that’s a stretch. However, today I get the opportunity to tell you the story about my biggest buck ever. Drew and I got to sit down on the afternoon of the same day I shot this buck and talk about how it happened. It’s no secret that this has been a tough start to a season for me. I’ve missed 4 deer and really struggled to have any mature buck encounters. The start of this hunt was no different! Several circumstances led me to going in blind to a new area that I really didn’t want to go to.
