The maroon community, San Basilio de Palenque, rose one day out of nowhere. To become recognized as an autonomous and free community, it had to fall and rise many times under the leadership of many and under different names. These are some of their stories. Later, we will talk more about one of the maroon heroes and how the palenques were the space where runaway slaves and their offspring reinvented their world from their African roots and pointed the way to their freedom.

La comunidad cimarrona de San Basilio de Palenque no surgió un día de la nada. Para ser reconocido como una comunidad autónoma y libre, tuvo que caer y multiplicarse muchas veces. Bajo el liderazgo de muchos y diferentes nombres. Estas son algunas de sus historias. Más tarde, hablamos más sobre uno de los héroes cimarrones y cómo los palenques se hicieron el espacio en el que los esclavos fugitivos y sus descendientes se reinventaron a partir de sus raíces africanas, y señalaron el camino de su libertad.

In the interview made by the Cuban essayist Miguel Barnet, Esteban Montejo, a former runaway, recounts his life as a slave in the Cuban Plantation Flor de Sagua. Later we explore slavery in the Cuban plantations and how Haiti’s abolition and conquest of self-government affected the slave trade and the sugar industry in Cuba.

En la entrevista realizada por el ensayista cubano Miguel Barnet, Esteban Montejo, un cimarrón, relata su vida como esclavo en la Plantación Cubana Flor de Sagua. Más adelante exploramos la esclavitud en las plantaciones cubanas y cómo la abolición y la conquista del autogobierno de Haití afectaron el comercio de esclavos y la industria azucarera en Cuba.

The poet King Nezahualcóyotl had an epic life of persecutions, major constructions, alliances, and conquests. But little is said about his family and how his passion led him to make an unforgettable mistake. Later we talk about the contradictions in the narratives about Nezahualcóyotl.

 Se dice que el sabio rey y poeta Nezahualcóyotl, tuvo una vida épica, de persecuciones, grandes construcciones, alianzas y conquistas. Pero poco se habla de cómo la pasión lo llevó a cometer un error que la vida se aseguró cobrarle. Más adelante hablamos de las contradicciones de Nezahualcóyotl, las cuales se basan en lo reportado por muchos cronistas.

It is said that the Toltec culture fell when the king and high priest Quetzalcoatl left the city of Tula.  In the afterword, we explore the reasons for his departure, the Chichimec origin of the Toltecs, and we introduced the Nonoalcas.

 Cuando el rey y sacerdote “Tolteca” Quetzalcóatl deja la ciudad de Tula, se dice que la ciudad entró en decadencia. The Aztec world, as well as other Mesoamerican cultures, was created in several attempts. Each time the gods disagreed on detail and restarted the world again. In the afterword, we dive into the theories associated with the meaning of this creation myth and how it seems to be a more historical account than a mere story.

 El mundo de los Aztecas, al igual que el de otras culturas Mesoamericanas, fue creado en varios intentos. Cada vez que los dioses estuvieron en desacuerdo, el mundo tuvo que ser creado de nuevo. The gnomes found out that the humans have counterfeited their precious ruby. But it is only when the patriarch gnome tells the story behind the first rubies that the gnomes understand how valuable their unique stones are. Later we talk about the political times in which Ruben Dario lived.

Los gnomos se han enterado que los humanos han re-creado el precioso rubí. Sin embargo, cambiaran de opinión al escuchar la historia de cómo la violenta pasión del gnomo patriarca por una mujer, les dio origen a los primeros rubíes. In the afterword, we discuss one of the Dominican Republic's dictators during Juan Bosch's life.
