Nearly $200 Million in Tax Breaks?
09/05/2019 Duración: 08minWe’re in the twilight of the legislative session here in Missouri, and as tends to happen, it looks like there’s going to be a legislative twist at the end. General Motors, the American car conglomerate, is reportedly considering a $1 billion expansion at its Wentzville auto production facility in the suburbs of St. Louis. The first the public heard about the proposal was on May 1, meaning that if the legislature passes a tax incentive plan of any kind for the company, General Motors will have gone from nothing to likely millions of dollars in hand in the course of only about 18 days. SMI Pod: What Is "Workforce Development"?
28/03/2019 Duración: 19minLearn more about the Show-Me Institute: https://showmeinstitute.org/ Private-sector employers have everything to gain by ensuring that new graduates are ready to start work right away. That’s why many professional associations issue their own industry-recognized credentials (IRCs), such as Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification. To promote IRC attainment among high school students, several states have begun offering teachers bonus pay for every student of theirs who passes an IRC exam. More students getting IRCs could create a stronger workforce for our state. Other states are finding creative ways to make this happen—shouldn’t Missouri?

SMI Pod: The Price Of Poverty In Missouri
21/02/2019 Duración: 44minPoverty rates in Missouri have trended downward in the years since the Great Recession. Recent research has indicated that nearly seven in ten Missouri children born into families in the bottom income quintile are expected to have escaped poverty by adulthood. But what of the poverty that remains in our state? In a pair of essays, Emily Stahly first examines the incidence of poverty across Missouri—particularly intergenerational poverty, in which economic hardship extends from one generation to the next. She next considers the cost of poverty, not only in terms of lost opportunity for the impoverished, but also in the form of entitlement spending borne by taxpayers. Finally, she examines education as a possible path out of poverty and looks at ways policymakers might remove obstacles along that path. To learn more about intergenerational poverty in Missouri and to find data sources for statistics included in this podcast, read the full essays here: To learn more about intergenerational poverty in Missouri
