In this South Seas story, our protagonist befriends an island man named Otoo and they become3 inseparable for years . Otoo becomes a stalwart protector and invaluable business asset and the two experience all kinds of danger as well as success. They become blood brothers, and, as the island custom dictates, they trade names. In the reviews I answer a listener's concern that Jack London became an avowed socialist in his later writing years. Pardon my voice in this last review section as I needed to wrap up this episode today. The story is clear voice all the way- only the review is scratchy. In Part 2 we offer some history on the town of Seney, Michigan, when it served as home for three thousand loggers, becoming a North Central version of a wild west town, in the days before Hemingway stopped there on his fishing trip. In part two Nick Adams manages to pull in some nice trout and loses one big one, the whole process described extremely well by young Hemingway who was on his way to a career in writing. Big Two-Hearted River is one of Hemingway's first stories, written upon his return from the Italian Front in 1919, and released in 1924 as a part of his short story collection titled "In Our Time". Part One joins the protagonist Nick Adams, who we can safely assume is Hemingway, since he actually experience this adventure, as he exits a train near the burned out town of Seney in upper Michigan in order to do a few days of solitary camping. There is a backstory to Hemingway's trip to Seney which I might share as a follow up to this short story. The story brought him wide acclaim as an up and coming young writer in the early twenties, writing about a generation which had been greatly affected by World War One. The Blue Cross is the first of G.K. Chesterton's 53 great Father brown short stories, and it introduces two characters that are often used in future stories- French Detective Valentin and the master criminal Flambeau- who will soon be reforming and coming to the good side in future stories. In this story Valentine is after a rare and valuable Blue Cross which he knows Father Brown is carrying with him from a council meeting, and believes the good Father is a simpleton and an easy mark. "Sunday Ball" by author Zane Grey gives us a rare look at the early days of baseball in middle America, what it meant to small towns, what people thought of it, and in this case, what moral dilemmas were caused when certain teams and towns started playing baseball on Sundays. Zane Grey's story is a window into time, and a true one, because we know that he played minor league ball for years, earning a scholarship to The University of Pennsylvania, where he played ball and studied to become a dentist, following in the footsteps of his father. But his real passion wasn't dentistry-it was writing, and he found every opportunity he could during his professional career as a dentist to write.
