Her penchant for crate-digging has taken her to various record stores from Brooklyn to Mexico City, Paris and Dubai, accumulating over 1000 vinyls.     Curating our mix this week is Paris-born Big Dope P, currently one of Europe’s most exciting DJs and producers, known for his signature blend of electro funk, bass/club, ghetto house and rap. He has previously shared the decks with some of the world’s biggest names in dance and rap music, including Basement Jaxx, Kaytranada, Pusha T, Maya Jane Coles, Lil Wayne, and Todd Edwards, just to name a few. At the age of 16, Big Dope P co-founded Moveltraxx imprint, one of the most influential labels in dance music, promoting footwork, ghetto house and jersey club since 2007. The label features releases from major electronic mavericks like Paul Johnson and DJ Tameil. Big Dope P’s discography features releases on global labels such as Fool’s Gold, Ed Banger, LuckyMe, Nervous, Ninja Tune, OWSLA and Local Action.     This week on SceneNoise’s select series, Matthew Benjamin, AKA Bushwacka! - one of the pioneers of the global electronic scene - will be taking over with a very special set. Bushwacka! was at the birth of the acid house era and sowed the seeds of the first wave of tech-house in the UK in the 90s. Initially a percussionist in the London School Symphony Orchestra, Bushwacka! became a member of the Rat Pack after a warehouse party in 1988. Bushwacka! was also part of one of the world’s most enduring DJ/producer duos with Layo. His career spans over three decades, during which he launched his legendary party series Shake It, which billed some of the biggest electronic acts on the scene like Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Laurent Garnier and more.     For our latest Select, we have Lebanese vinyl maverick, NeighborsByMusic. Her penchant for discovering new sounds has led her to build an extensive repertoire over the years, blending diverse music styles from different cultures. Her sets often incorporate influences from oriental, Brazilian funk, hip-hop and jazz. NeighborsByMusic treats us to a special vinyl-only set–initially recorded at JIVE in Beirut–that meshes together threads of Brazilian bossa nova, funk, and Arabic oldies from Simone and Hamid El Shaeri with 90s hip-hop and a hint of jazzy house here and there. The colossal proportions of the set, fitting together a multitude of different sounds, are somewhat reflective of the organised chaos that Lebanon is known for. Featuring a thoughtfully curated selection of feel-good tunes, such as Ezra Collective’s ‘Palm Wine’, Mtume’s ‘Juicy Fruit’, and Simone’s ‘Mabsouta’, the set ends abruptly, as if alluding to a typical electricity cut at midnight in Beirut.
