Just as quickly, United have released the 25/26 retained list, saying goodbye to a host of faces who were crucial in securing our instant return to the third tier. Caspell, Jules and Swindle go over the list and talk about their favourite memories of our departing players, while also casting their eye over how the squad is starting to shape up for next season. We did it. At the first time of asking, Cambridge United have been promoted back to League One. And we did it in the nerviest way possible, drawing 0-0 at Crewe and waiting for a few agonising minutes as Salford couldn’t find the winner at Crawley that would leapfrog us. It was, thankfully, a comfortable afternoon on Saturday. A 3-0 win in the glorious April sunshine at the Abbey that sent Barrow to the foot of the 92, and kept our fate on final day in our own hands. A win at Crewe and we’re back in League One at the first time of asking, anything else and we’ll be looking at our phones as Salford and Notts County are hot on our heels. This week has not gone to plan. A Tuesday night loss against Grimsby in our game in hand followed by Salford taking all three points against Bromley on Thursday means the promotion race will go to the final day. To keep it in our hands, we just need to beat a relegation-threatened Barrow on Saturday… it’s as simple as that. It feels like an age since the U’s drew 0-0 at Bromley. The Magpies come to town in a gigantic 3rd vs 4th match-up at the top end of League 2, in a game that will have huge ramifications for who ends up being promoted automatically. They’ve done it again. Twice over the Easter weekend United let a 1-0 lead slip out of their grasp in stoppage time. Thursday’s performance against Swindon gave us a few positives to cling onto, Monday’s showing and the result that comes with it give very, very little. Backed by a sell-out 1800 capacity away end, Harris’ U’s managed to disappoint the amber nation on Saturday afternoon in North London by succumbing to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of play-off chasing Barnet. Fresh off their big efforts in the half marathon, there’s nothing Matt and Tom will want to be doing more than discussing a tough afternoon in the North West. United were 2 minutes away from a massive three points on Saturday, but a late penalty denied them a win that would have kept them two points from top and put a five point gap between themselves and Milton Keynes.
