You really do care about them, but can't place a face to a name. * Everyone feels awkward if you don't remember each other's names, it's going to be resolved if you get it out of the way. * Get the name out of the way before getting too far in, otherwise it seems rude to ask at the end of the conversation. Plus, you have the opportunity to use their name if you get it in the beginning. * Look for anyone around whose name you DO know to introduce the unknown named person to. It is the responsibility of the friend to then ask the name of the unknown. * If you want an easy cop out to remind someone of your name, tell a story when you were talking to yourself and mention your name out loud
