Sinopsis

Jacky Winter Gives You The Business is a weekly podcast hosted by Lara Chan-Baker and Jeremy Wortsman. As Producers at Jacky Winter — a creative production and artist representation studio based in both Melbourne, Australia and New York City — their roles put them right in the centre of the action, in between client and creative, so they get to see all sides of the process. But they want to see more. Joined by special guests from all corners of the industry landscape, they deep dive into the ideas, issues and insights driving the many moving parts of today's creative ecosystem. Shifting format from year to year, Season 8 sees them venturing outside their own industry to explore how others do it. How they conceive of, manage and produce all sorts of creative outputs — from buildings, to shoes, to plays, to documentaries, and all sorts of other things that make up our lives. It all involves production, and together they're exploring what that looks like for different people and companies and what we can learn from them. Join them each week as they highlight a different industry alongside a very special guest. It’s an ongoing exploration of what the hell we’re all doing and why and how we’re doing it.

  • 049 - True Grit (with Andrew Fairclough)

    17/08/2018 Duración: 53min

Helping us bring some outside perspective today is our special guest and Jacky Winter artist Andrew Fairclough. Andrew is an Australian illustrator, designer and typographer based in LA. After a misspent youth completing a Business Degree, Andrew moved on to designing skate and snowboard graphics in between bouts of self-instruction and full time work in a design agency in his hometown of Sydney. Andrew’s work is inspired by mid-century spot illustrations and design as well as vintage sci-fi, comics, surrealism, DIY art culture, and the textural wonders of degraded print. For many other designers and Illustrators, Andrew might be more well-known as the founder and creative behind the True Grit Texture Supply co - The business he established in 2015 out of his love for all things texture and is now a thriving business in it’s own right. • 036 - Plagiarism & Pricing

    30/03/2018 Duración: 36min

In case you missed it, last year we launched Open Tabs, a series of events we started with our friends at Sample Brewing which are held inside our client’s offices, where we would take four people with us - two JW artists and 2 plain interesting creative people. A bastard child of Pecha Kucha and Creative Mornings We gave each person 10 minutes to go over ten of their open tabs for one minute each - you can find out more at opentabs.rodeo if you’re interested in the full spiel. It’s something that we’ve had heaps of fun doing, as the internet is really our training ground in so many ways, so we decided that we’d be expanding our segment previously known as ‘mini links’ into a longer episode-wide discussion where we can give some of our favourite topics a bit more room to breathe. • 035 - Tom & George McQueen

    23/03/2018 Duración: 43min

Continuing along on our theme of tracking down every Australian currently living in New York and interviewing them on this podcast, we get to cross not one, but two names off our bucket list today. Currently ranked #1 Copywriter and #1 Art Director in the Cannes Lions Global Rankings respectively, Tom and George McQueen spent four years at Clemenger BBDO in Melbourne, producing some of their most memorable and effective campaigns in recent years, most notably, the ‘Meet Graham’ piece for the TAC along with artist Patricia Piccinini before moving over to the big apple where they are currently stationed at Droga5 and doing us all very proud. We’re so excited to have them here today to hopefully bring a new perspective to the conversations we’ve been having here, as ironically I think this is the first time we’ve heard from the perspective of a creative, especially a team, and especially especially, identical twins. 09/03/2018 Duración: 44min

Nearly a decade ago, before Food Trucks were literally everywhere, (and in the case of Australia, five years too late) Raph Rashid launched one of Australia’s very first, Beatbox Kitchen. Beatbox has since expanded to a whole fleet of vehicles and Raph has gone on to open a slew of successful businesses across various cuisines — including a very tasty donut shop and a brick-and-mortar restaurant. Alongside full-blown culinary domination, Raph also finds time to be a published Author and Photographer with work in the collection of the Smithsonian, as well as a father of two and partner to one of our nearest and dearest Jacky Winter artists, Beci Orpin. As someone with a seemingly never-ending appetite for new creative projects, we really wanted to sit down with Raph to talk about the systems, methods, and tools he uses to dish up so much great work, and learn the secret ingredients of his success, with just a dash of great punnery. For those people of a certain age and demographic here in Melbourne - Penny Modra is someone who needs no introduction. From the days that we cofounded Is Not Magazine together, to her time as the editor of city guide The Thousands, to her long tenure as an arts writer for The Age. Penny is someone who has lived and breathed words her entire career, and has taken that passion and craft into the founding of The Good Copy - A writing school, publisher and shop, for word people. While our two industries may not be in the same exact circles anymore, we thought bringing Penny in would be a perfect way to kickstart our ‘non-industry’ interviews, especially given all the conversation we have around the important role that written communications play in creative production and life in general. We've also got a Riso print giveaway going just for our beloved podcast listeners, head over to our instagram post for more details!
