Camille is an unreleased album planned for release under a pseudonym using distorted vocals recorded in September-October 1986, shortly after The Revolution disbanded (although original versions of Feel U Up and Strange Relationship were recorded in '81 and '83). Camille was issued a catalog number (9)25543 by Warner Bros. and planned for release in January 1987 with Shockadelica as the first single. Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman appear on Strange Relationship (although their contributions were buried in the mix), and Susannah Melvoin on Rockhard In a Funky Place. As the project developed into Crystal Ball, seven of the eight tracks were kept. Ultimately, Housequake, Strange Relationship, and If I Was Your Girlfriend remained as the album developed into Sign O’ The Times.

Back in my Northern Soul bag celebrating GWP Records. GWP were the initials of Gerard W Purcell, an artist/manager who had great success with country musician Eddy Arnold and trumpeter Al Hirt. He also worked with Lena Horne, the poet Maya Angelou and Dizzy Gillespie among many others. In the mid-60s he expanded the recording side of his business with Gale Garnett and several R&B acts, notably Benny Gordon and Kenny Carter. For the Benny Gordon releases he used veteran producer Teacho Wiltshire, but by the time of the Kenny Carter recordings he had brought in Larry Banks to produce and provide great songs. Other acts that fell under Larry Banks’ auspices were the Geminis, the Exciters, and his life partner Joan Bates, aka Jaibi. Originally married to R&B singer Bessie Banks, with whom he made the deep soul classic ‘Go Now’, Larry fell in love with Joan Bates, a singer with the Pleasures group, and they set up as a couple. For me, the aughts consisted of lots and lots of virtual crate-digging. I found so much great stuff back then that I ultimately bought a controller and resumed DJing after something like a 15-year break. For this mix I combed through joints I collected mostly during what is now called the blog era. These are gems that have survived countless hard drive purges over the years and currently live in a folder named "Indy Rap" because I can't think of a better genre name.
