Ahh Christmas. The holiday that tries to be one thing but ultimately is about another.  Parents seem to fall into two camps; those who listened attentively to their spouse and kids throughout the year and bought all presents by November 1st and those of us who now blame lack of presents on "supply chain issues." There are those that give physical gifts and and those that give experiences. In Mike's case he was able to give his wife heather both! When he gave her a physical gift of a dehumidifier, he also gave her the experience gift of sheer disappointment. Mike can really sit and spin on this one. Listen as Mike and Heather get into it. Let me drop a little math on you; Holidays = In-laws. Boom. Bam. Move over Hawking. Thanks Newton, but I'm good. I just proved the transient property of how your In-Laws WILL show up at your house for holidays. [Nasal voice} "But we normally go to them." Whatever dude, Math isn't an exact science, everyone knows that. Here's the point: you can't have the holidays without the In Laws. For better or worse it' just  a fact and I just "mathed" it. Have you heard? Parenting kids is hard! Yeah, the new study just came in, from me, and it's true #science. As parents, the number 1 thing you need to do is keep a united front. To do that you need to be, y'know, "united."  How do you unite after all the screaming and crying (not to mention what your kids are doing)? You have a date night. It's a time to reconnect. But more importantly, it's time alone, together. Y'know, to strategize how to keep those little buggers in place. Some of the most important advances in history have come from a date night. There are times as a parent your kid, the same kid who barely talks to you, will stand up in front of guests at a party and recite Shakespeare. Ok, fine, that's almost never happened. But, BUT, there are things similar that your kids will do or you're told your kid did that leave you with one simple question "My kid did that?!" We know parents have it tough, but do our kids? A lot's changed since we were kids. Enrique Iglesias was crushing the charts, Smashmouth was a thing, and flying cars is what we had to look forward to in 2021. Maybe the biggest thing that's changed has been parenting styles. Have we gone from "suck" to "blow" in one generation? Too many participation trophies? Too few boundaries? Have we overcorrected? No, no. It's the KIDS who are wrong! Yeah, it's always those damn kids. Well an entire generation would've gotten away too with it, if it weren't for these two meddling podcasting dads Mike and Pete. It's been a year and a half since parents took on the mantle of being full time teachers on top of everything else we have going on. While in some households lockdowns meant that child mortality skyrocketed, especially around bedtime [JUST BRUSH YOUR TEEEEEEETH!!], others have lived some kind of Swiss Family Robinson kinda life  and now it's all come crashing down as their kids are FINALLY back in school. Hard to relate I know, but here on the Dad & Buried podcast we're nothing if not 1) well researched, 2) fair and balanced. The great parenting philosopher Thanos summed it up best when asked by a small child, "what did it cost?" [Thanos]: "Everything." The sacrifice is real and... [looks down at shoes and kicks a stone] worth it. When you become a parent there are some things you know you have to give up like being in a rock band, or wingsuiting. But then there's other things that you never thought you'd have to give up like going out with friends, video games or doing class A drugs. Is it even possible to raise well rounded kids these days? We all fall into our niche interests so quickly.  And by niche interests I obviously mean watching stuff on the internet. Are the goalposts too narrow? We want our kids to be polite, but not so polite they don't stand up for themselves. We want them to be good at sports, school, and social stuff but not too focused on any one of those. Well thankfully Mike and Pete have the 3 specific steps that will work EVERY time, or not.  Enjoy! Every kid has their own unique gift, right? So why do we parents see someone else's kid doing something awesome like a backflip or talking nicely to their parents and immediately think why the hell can't my kid do that?! Yeah, ok my kid's "gift" is that they are an  incredibly generous, giving spirit, but I'm talking BACKFLIP people, c'umon! Mike and Pete get into it. Enjoy! Support us

Participation trophies were originally used as a way to incentivise kids at a key point (when they are young) to want to keep playing that sport rather than quit after one season. However, now the absence of any merit based trophies means none of our kids are really incentivized to win. In some cases we let our kids off the hook if they don't want to show up for team practice. To Pete it's all gone too far. To Mike it hasn't gone far enough and wants all sports canceled. It's a cracker. Enjoy! Support us

Cherish every moment cause it goes so fast. Oh yeah?! Maybe you want to come over and deal with this little monster who's making us all late cause they're rolling around on the floor screaming that their sock as "TOO COMFORTABLE!" Little nuggets like this litter the parenting world and it's up to us parents to figure out what tidbits to use and which to ditch.  Having said that the one piece of advice we ALL can agree on is never leave your kid at home while you take your extended family go on a trip to Paris.
