Blueprints - Mapping out a better future for at risk youth.
17/12/2020 Duración: 14minWhite Ribbon is delighted to be able to share the details of an exciting new opportunity to assist “at risk” youth in South Auckland. In July of this year, a partnership agreement was established between White Ribbon and the New Zealand Police within Counties Manukau East. The intention was to work collaboratively together on a programme addressing the numerous issues facing young men 14 to 18 years of age that come to the attention of the Police within this community. In this country most violence by men against women takes place in the home – with an average of 14 women a year killed by their partners or ex-partners. Each year there are over 3,500 convictions recorded against men for assaults on women and one in five women will experience sexual assault or sexual interference at some point in their lives.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Geraldine Tew - Upcycling to create beautiful Christmas presents
13/12/2020 Duración: 10minThe ReCreators, a group of artisans who run creative upcycling workshops, say they have seen a marked increase in the amount of people making the conscious decision to create their own Christmas presents this year. Geraldine Tew, founder of the The ReCreators based in West Auckland, says 2020 has been many things for many people, but what they have experienced is an obvious increase in people choosing to create Christmas gifts and decorations from previously unwanted materials, rather than purchase new. Ms Tew estimates that in the two years since they held the first workshop, they have diverted upwards of two tonnes of discarded materials away from landfill. The ReCreators hold community DIY upcycling workshops throughout Auckland, teaching adults and children how they can create new products from previously unwanted or discarded materials. They are running a series of DIY community events in the lead up to Christmas and in the new year. https://therecreators.co.nz/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy inf

Nicholas Bowden, Dr Jesse Kokaua & Sam Murray - Data on ethnic inequality in access to Disability Support Services and the Disability Allowance
10/12/2020 Duración: 13minEarlier this year, a collaborative research by A Better Start & CCS Disability Action looked at the ethnic inequality in access to disability support. It looked at how Maori & pacific islanders are represented compared to non-Maori & pasefika around areas such as disability support services (DSS) [Ministry of Health’s] and ongoing resource services (ORS) [Ministry of Education]. Included in the scope of the research was the payment rates of the Disability Allowance and ethnicity. The results? Strong evidence that Pacific peoples were underrepresented amongst children and young people accessing the Ministry of Health’s Disability Support Services. Between the March 2010 quarter and the March 2020 quarter, for people of working age, New Zealand Europeans received a median payment rate from the Disability Allowance that was between 1.4 and 1.6 higher than for Māori and between 2.1 and 2.4 higher than for Pacific peoples.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
