The Southern Ground Hunting podcast heads west this week. Parker and his Dad recap a successful turkey hunt to the desert of west Texas. While we're usually talking about hunting turkeys on public land, most people know that it's nearly not even doable to do so in Texas. Usually, people who want to mark Texas off the list have to settle for an outfitter, which can be very expensive. However, we were able to find a couple of different properties to hunt for $0 by just making a few phone calls. Turkey culture in Texas is just altogether different. Parker admits that he did not appreciate the wild turkey while being raised out there, but it was time to come back to the old stompin' grounds to pay this bird the respect it deserves. We're excited to have a guest from South Alabama named Jay Hembree of Panola Productions. Jay hunts gobblers mostly in the river bottoms and swamps of south Alabama with great success! We're going deep this week on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast as we discuss the elephant in the room. The question "Is social media really ruining public land hunting?" We've heard it talked about on different platforms in recent months, but as turkey seasons open up across the country, you can't deny that some of the turkey hunting gold mines of past years have turned into a circus. Our guest, Joey Bell, talks about his home state of Tennessee and some of the issues he believes have affected a once great turkey hunting state. The truth is, hunting facebook groups have absolutely contributed to the amount of pressure we're seeing right now in these public hunting areas. "Not looking for your honey holes, but could someone tell me a good wma to hunt in _____ state?" Does that sound familiar? It seems innocent and it probably is, but broadcasting it to a group with 13,000 members is probably not a great idea. On this week's episode of Southern Ground Hunting, a few of us had a chat about turkey season being just around the corner. As the season approaches, we've been brushing up on our understanding of the new regulations that will be in affect this season in Alabama. We're joined by our friend Devin Duncan of Virginia for this episode. While Devin isn't an Alabama resident, he has spent some time turkey hunting here. In fact, in the 2020 season he was able to kill 4 public land gobblers in 5 1/2 days of hunting. Even in his success, he had some self reflection to do as he says "I just felt kind of guilty for killing that many turkeys". We thought he would be a great voice on the topic as a non-resident, and we even squeeze a few tactics out of him.
