A few episodes ago on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast, we each drafted a team of hunters in a mock "Fantasy Draft". One of Parker's picks was a fella named Brett Mashburn. Brett is joining us this week to talk about his extremely aggressive public land hunting style. Brett puts a ton of emphasis on pre/post season scouting when it comes to finding a buck's bedroom. In this episode, he'll explain his scouting and what he's looking for. While Brett definitely values the scouting, accessing the spot is another area of emphasis. We're going way south to Florida this week on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast. Did you know that some parts of Florida open up for deer season in late July, and parts of Florida don't close until late February? This week on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast, we're talking to Jake Lishen about how to make a game plan on southern public land bucks when deer are entering into the post rut phase. For many of us, it's easy to decide to hunt deer like it's the rut when you're within a few weeks of the peak. Especially when you're on an out of state hunt. What Jake talks about is how him and his buddies analyzed the sign on their trip to Alabama, determined it was in fact later than peak rut in that area, and started inching closer and closer to a mature buck based on his sign alone. In this convo, Parker and Jake just have a candid conversation breaking down what Jake did to play the odds in this hunt. This week on the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast, we're talking about hunting southern bucks in the swamps. Parker was able to tag his 3rd and final Alabama buck of the year in south Alabama, but the cool thing was being able to piece together some consistencies in swamp habitat that led to finding and taking this buck. Southern swamps are a little bit different than what folks might experience in the midwest or northern US. River cane, palmettos, water oaks & big cypress stands are the norm, broken up by pine and cedar breaks. Over the last several years Parker has challenged himself to try to learn this type of habitat and how the deer are using it. This week we're talking with an absolute legendary deer killing machine, Jim Forbes. Jim has been hunting the mountains of Virginia for his whole life and has learned things that have upped his odds in the deer woods. Like so many local legends we've talked to in the past, Jim makes it clear that he's not hunting deer, he's hunting old mature bucks. Mr. Forbes continuously says "food is everything in these mountains", and for good reason. He talks with us about just how important it is to find the hot oak trees in the mountains, with red oak acorns being his personal favorite. This makes sense as he tells us that his most successful time is in the latest part of the rut. Several things stick out to us about Jim. First of all, he is very calculated about his approach. Hearing him talk about how he breaks down the monotonous big woods found in the mountains is nothing short of precise. Secondly, he places most of his confidence in the natural features he finds.
