In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie examine Holy Wars...The Punishment Due by Megadeth classic. I think there is still some dispute over which angle it officially takes, anti religion or antiwar? Where did we end up? This week in I Heard This Happened: some dark progressive shoegaze and a little bit of Indonesian pop-punk. Nicky’s album this week is The Fall by SOM. I’m not sure why i’ve been on such an art rock kick but bandcamp never disappoints here. The album is way heavier than I consider shoegaze but its definitely droney as hell with super melodic airy vocals. Maybe even a spaced out version of Boy’s Night Out. It holds you in a dark soupy mess for the duration and makes you feel all sort of weird confused teenagery feelings. Don’t listen to if you need to adult that day. Lizzie brings us Congratulations, You’re Getting Old by Linger. A fun upbeat album that waffles between classic Weezer and Bracket. It’s not quite a 90’s pastiche but hits all the notes the old skate punk used to have while maint

In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie examine the Joni Mitchel classic, later re-popularized by Counting Crows, Big Yellow Taxi. Nick you may or may not know is a big fan of nature and listening to an economic illiterate try and throw shade at the wrong places may have gotten under his bonnet. This week in I Heard This Happened: some progressive instrumental rock with a dire message, a creative saxophone jazz offering and a bonus pop-punk offering from a previous feature. Nicky’s album this week is Fire By The Silos by Toska. If you’re a fan of progressive music and you aren’t on bandcamp at least weekly, you are doing life wrong. This is yet another killer find of mostly instrumental prog-rock. The title track which is the only track with lyric, can easily be taken as a support of a libertarian worldview paints a get-wrenching portrait of how central planning can destroy individuals, not just nations. Lizzie Brings us Becoming by Mammal Hands. After a difficult time finding an album to get into this week,

In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie examine the 90’s party banger Doo Wop (That Thing) by Lauryn Hill. We feel like this one is especially prescient considering al the hubbub Kanye has been getting in for his critiques of his culture. Nothing new if you ask us. This week in I Heard This Happened: pirate kids songs & more sad bastard music. Nicky’s album this week is Sea Songs For Little Pirates by Jason Andre. Perhaps a break with character since it’s usually Lizzie bringing the kid’s songs, but I this was a last minute saving grace find. There’s a claim it’s even educational but really we’re just in it for the Args. Lizzie per usual found us more of that sad bastard music she seems to love so much. Her choice this week is Ennui by Animal Sounds. While very in vein sonically this one does break character with the addition of some out of character bluesy guitar. This week's interview is with Zama Rripa a musician bringing the liberty, love and peace with his newest record American Soul. We had a grand

In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie examine the Flobots classic Handlebars and take a look at what we can only see as the most confused rebuttal of capitalism ever conceived. Why didn’t this one make the cut? Let’s find out. This week in I Heard This Happened: the world’s most musical hardcore, & the next model Todd Rundgren. Nicky’s album this week is NoiSays by NoiSays. The album is something like what I imagine would happen if Miles Davis was born in the 90s and a product of divorce where mom & dad keep buying guitars and lessons to prove how much they love him but he only gets more angry. This is hands down one of the most musical hardcore records i’ve ever heard. I think they’re technically some variant of math-rock but they’re quite heavy. Highly recomended. Also this week: Lizzie found the next incarnation of Todd Rundgren. Low Poly Breakfast by Nova Bound is a great pop-rock offering with hints of Wings, Metronomy and all the best of 70’s soft rock all milled about in there. Both of us rea

In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie begin by taking a look at Rabbit’s Revenge by Tom Morello featuring Bassnectar, Big Boi & Killer Mike. Things get heated on a number of fronts and it makes a nice prelude to the featured interview. This week in I Heard This Happened: shimmery doom & synthy-pop?.   Nicky's pick this week is Calm Black Water by REZN, out of Chicago. A dark (as name suggests) but shimmery (like icy water?) offering...maybe they named it more perfect than I can describe it... Lizzie's pick is Marea EP by Telegraph Tehran, of Bolgna, Italy. Lizzie calls it pop, im not sold on that. Tell me I’m wrong. This week we sneak in a quick bonus interview with a local Ohio Libertarian running for Geauga County Commissioner, Candace Loyd. This week’s interview is with Antony Sammeroff of The Scottish Liberty Podcast. Lizzie geeked out at the idea of talking to a real live scottish person and maybe it was a tad unproductive. Easily our most combative episode, find out why! Antony's Top 5 Appeti

In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie break from the norm and approach a guest suggestion with perhaps the most incomprehensible lyrics we’ve ever addressed; specifically Carrot Rope by Pavement...I’m not sure we ever really grasped what it was about... This week in I Heard This Happened: educational rap for kids & sad rainy sunday songs.   Nicky's pick this week is Skylight by Pinegrove, a leathery alt-country/ folk offering. These are the least Jersey Jersey boys i’ve ever heard. Go check it out if you need to feel balanced on a crappy day. Lizzie's pick on the other hand is Baba Got Bars Vol III by Baba Bomani. This educational hip hop for kids is super entertaining. The standout track is The Black Entertainer which gives a history of black people in music over the Scott Joplin tune that paved the way for this history. This week’s interview is with a personal favorite podcaster, Marc Clair of Lions Of Liberty. We talk to Marc about all the concerts we don’t get by not living in LA, his dark past as

In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie look at Take Back The Power by The Interrupters. Which side of the anarchist divide does it fall on? This week in I Heard This Happened, Nicky visits Japan & Lizzie finds the warm safe spaces only classic pop rock can bring. Nick’s choice Summer Touch by マクロスMACROSS 82-99, is a future-funk hip-hoppy, smooth-jazzy escapade, that encapsulates the best parts of summer nicely for year-round consumption. Lizzie on the other hand brings us Too Long So Long by Everett Almond, an Elvis Costello knock-off in all the ways you want that done, and at 4 tracks well worth the time investment. This week’s interview is with the one and only Mr. Robert P Murphy. We cover a bunch of territory including karaoke, Les Mis, The Beatles & The Beastie Boys so i wont belabor further. Just listen. In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie make a contentious decision on Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On during analysis time. Nick was ready to hand out the coveted Eric July award but Lizzie brought him back to reality...how far did it slip? This week in I Heard This Happened Nicky heads to thinky-dreamy land and Lizzie gets lost in the muck of some instrumental 60s throwback jazz. Nicky brings us the cerebral The More I Sleep The Less I Dream by We Were Promised Jetpacks. An equally atmospheric and heavy offering these gents from the UK manage an ebb and flow hard to pull off and still sound cohesive let alone structured. Lizzie brings us Stop Thief! By Andre M which is something akin to pulling the fun swinging music from the terrible Austin Powers movies. This week we break with the norm of an interview to talk about movies! In particular Music Movies. We take a look at five very different films: Rockstar, Ray, The Commitments, Idlewild & American Graffiti For music/show notes visit: http://www.soundslik

In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie take a gander at C.R.E.A.M. by Wu-Tang Clan. The song is a perfect starting point to discuss a number of libertarian themes. Child labor laws, monetary theory, capitalism, black markets...a lil bit of everything This week in I Heard This Happened Nicky has found his way back to the heavy while Lizzie hits us with a reissue of some early 00's indie rock. Nicky brings us Chicago metal outfit The Skull's newest disk The Endless Road Turns Dark. Lizzie on the other hand brings us Sonny Says by swedish indie outfit Sonny Crocket. In this week’s interview we talk to the lovely Raylene Lightheart of Blast Off! With Johnny Rocket. A firebrand anarchist working within the LP and no shortage of guff to give. In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie start airing out that dirty religious laundry they have with each other. We look at Freewill by Rush and discuss its religious & objectivist messages. This week I Heard This Happened finds our pair in very different worlds indeed. Nick's over in Europe in some sweaty club and Lizzy is apparently ten years old plopped down in front of The Cosby Show or Wings or some such nonsense.Nicky brings Kingdoms In Colour by Maribou State. An atmospheric yet easily danceable electronic offering. It reminds me of Caribou meets Royksop but with a more modern R&B bent at times. Lizzy brings The Optimist by Vulfpeck guitarist Cory Wong. Her description is "Imagine if John Mayer had funk as his musical background instead of blues. In this week’s interview we talk to Mance Rayder of The Free Man Beyond The Wall about his own time in the music industry and some strange concerts you wouldn’t believe happened. In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie are really feeling the communism wafting through the air. Enter The Scorpions with Winds Of Change. More than just a ballad? Let’s find out. In “I Heard This Happened” our protagonists get comfy with our nerd sides and bring out some pop records. Nicky plies us with Stop Apologizing by Frankie Valet. A noisy pop wunderkind. Lizzie has brought Water Music by Adron. Really you just need to listen to get her description of this one. In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie take a listener suggestion and examine the alternative reality that is Crowded House’s Don’t Dream It’s Over through a liberty lense. Does it pass the Ancap test? In “I Heard This Happened” our hosts bring the heavy...in various ways. Nick’s choice this week is Only Self by Philadelphia hardcore outfit Jesus Piece. There aren’t words for this other than Heavy and Political. A perfect pair. Lizzie brings a so-cal punk-metal hybrid that would fit perfect into the Fat Wreck Chords catalogue. The Jitters By Scott Sellers is a perfect amalgam of riffs, catchy hooks and goofy sensibilities. Lastly, in this week’s interview we talk to libertarian entrepreneur John Vincent about video games, pasta & not sharing the Giuliani moment. In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie begin by hopping into the wayback machine and digging into the Roggers And Hammerstein song I Enjoy Being A Girl from the Flower Drum Song soundtrack. What are the cultural implications of a song that celebrates an appreciation for stereotypically American gender roles. How do those factor into a voluntary society? Is Lizzie actually leading the conversation? In “I Heard This Happened” we switch roles as Nicky P brings the girl-pop and Lizzie brings the post-hardcore to the table. Nicks bandcamp choice this week is Future Me Hates Me by The Beths out of New Zealand. An infectious pop-rock disc ready to carry summer well into September. The sweet vocals are juxtaposed against fuzzy buzzy guitars and lush washes of harmonies. Lizzie on the other hand brings California Cousins’ album Distant Relatives into the booth. The group hailing from Rochester, NY is keeping the spirit of post-hardcore and emo alive well after necessary and I suppose we owe them thanks for that. This

In today's episode Nicky P & Lizzie start out looking critically looking at “Just A Girl” by No Doubt. Is it an SJW anthem or an individual appeal to autonomy? Find out! In “I Heard This Happened” we check out two new releases on bandcamp.com. Nicky brings Ghost City by Delta Sleep to the table. An ambient math-rock concept album out of the UK. Lizzie brings Paraparlor by Sharesprings, an Indonesian Alt-Pop outfit reminiscent of best coast or the best parts of the Daria or Pete & Pete soundtracks. This week we talk to Scott McDonald of The Ancap Barbershop over on the Pax Libertas network. An irreverent comic voice we cut deep into this 3 hour conversation for this weeks show.
