Escape to Victory (1981)
21/09/2020 Duración: 01h03minIf you love soccer and the world's nicest Nazis, then "Escape to Victory" is the movie for you. Listener Joe T commissioned this World War II POW tale from across the pond, then was kind enough to call in with the most professional voicemail we've ever received. "Victory" is a movie that proved actors want to be footballers, and footballers want to be actors, and the French Resistance always gets the short end of the stick. Hear Gene's frustration with the shower scene, Big D's disappointment in Pele, and Ash's indignation with butchered French. Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)
14/09/2020 Duración: 01h07min"Fast Times at Ridgemont High" did everything an '80s high school movie was supposed to do. It did it first, and it did it best. The cast of young actors grew up to be some of the biggest names in Hollywood, Cameron Crowe went on to write "Jerry McGuire" and "Almost Famous," and director Amy Heckerling changed America's view of teens again when she created "Clueless." Find out how "Fast Times" taught Big D about women's struggles; why Ash's mom calls it "the abortion movie," and why Gene thinks shopping malls will make a comeback. Also ... the bikini scene ... yeah, it still holds up. Young Guns (1988)
08/09/2020 Duración: 01h09min"Regulators, mount up!" Few words inspire more '80s Western nostalgia, and few movies manage to mix hot young actors with dusty old history the way "Young Guns" did. This film about the Lincoln County War has it all: Emilio Estevez in a likable role, Keifer Sutherland looking like a dream, Charlie Sheen being sorta normal. The kill count is high, the complexity is low, and through it all runs a wild vein of '80s teen pluck. Big D loved the peyote scene but hated Lou Diamond Phillips' performance. Ash turned up her nose at the beginning but bought in by the end. And Gene busted out his gunslinging history books like any good Arizonan would. Get ready for gratuitous slow-motion, questionable escapes, an unnecessary wedding, and Old West sex. Reap the whirlwind! Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
02/09/2020 Duración: 01h07min"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" might be the movie the Shat crew was born to cover: Gene's a career journalist. Ash launched an entire podcast on addiction and recovery. And Big D really, really, really likes hallucinogens. So it's no surprise we had a lot to say about Johnny Depp's unforgettable performance as Hunter S. Thompson chronicling an insane assignment at Las Vegas motorcycle race. The surprise came in how much meaning we found—more than two decades later—in a film largely dismissed as disorganized, unfocused, pointless, and immature. "Fear and Loathing" changed listener Kipp's life enough to warrant a Shat The Movies commission, and it gave all three Shat hosts a lot to think about—even if some of those things were a bloated Benicio del Toro, a balding Tobey Maguire, the deep symbolism of vomit-covered cars, or the many nights chemicals erased from our memories. Find out what happened to Dick Ebert's clothes, what Ash discovered about adrenochrome, and why Gene wants to remodel in this edition of

The Mummy (1999)
25/08/2020 Duración: 01h09minDo you love adventure films? Sexy guys and gals on camelback your thing? Do you pine for the golden age of Brendan Fraser’s film career? If the answer to any of those questions is yes, listener Ryan G commissioned just the movie for you- 1999’s “The Mummy.” In this episode, Big D walks us through how to avoid death by quicksand. Gene swoons over Anck-Su-Namun’s golden painted body. And Ashley pines for Ardeth, face tattoos and all. Also, the crew talks about the movie’s missed opportunities to weaponize cats (catpacks, anyone?), the benefits of camels over horses, the sketchy motivations of the Pharaoh’s priests, and whether Imhotep is the victim, not the bad guy. In the end, we ask, “Is ‘The Mummy’ a great movie?” Maybe not. But it sure is one heck of a fun ride on this week’s Shat the Movies. Fletch Lives (1989)
18/08/2020 Duración: 01h11minSequels can be hit or miss but return commissioner Adam decided to take the chance on the 1989 sequel to a classic Chevy Chase film, “Fletch Lives.” A critical failure but box office success, “Fletch Lives” revives the role of the costume-wearing reporter as he goes to Louisiana to claim a surprise inheritance. The movie harkens back to a time of journalism past where reporters made actual money, had company cars, and endless supplies of disguises. From the cover art to jaw-dropping musical numbers, the Shat hosts were surprised by many of the movie's turns including totally underappreciated actors, completely incorrect accents, and a seemingly angry leading man. Big D, Gene, and Ash try their best to answer the many questions “Fletch Lives” leaves with its viewer. Was any woman in this film attracted to Chevy Chase? Does God want his followers to worship him by going to amusement parks? And was Fletch fooling anyone with those get-ups? Discover the answers to these questions and more as the Shat crew goes do

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)
12/08/2020 Duración: 01h16minIn 1999, the world stood on the brink of massive change: a new millennium, a new reality, the future of our dreams sitting right on our doorstep. Big D had just joined the Army. Roger readied himself for deployment to sleep away camp, and Mister C was just a boy. On the horizon, launching movies into a new era, was "The Phantom Menace." Star Wars' first film after 16 years frozen in carbonite was a prequel, and nobody thought to question at the time what a strange paradox we were about to experience. Episode I promised to show us how it all began by adding big-name actors, mind-blowing computer effects, and exciting new characters. And while that promise was fulfilled, "The Phantom Menace" also opened a sarlacc pit of missteps—inconsistent Jedi powers, an unsatisfying Anakin Skywalker, reckless parents, an abused C3PO, unnecessary characters, and the hyper-animated elephant in the room: Jar Jar Binks. How could a movie with such rich lineage stumble so horribly out of the gate? The cringe-worthy love story, i

Adventures in Babysitting (1987)
04/08/2020 Duración: 01h09minWe all know the "Adventures in Babysitting" cover art, but do you really know what this 1987 comedy is all about? It's Elizabeth Shue at her feel-good-movie best. It's also the major motion picture version of an afterschool special about the dangers of the city. It might even be an attempt to lampoon the fears of '80s suburbanites. Putting Christopher Columbus' box office debut under the Shat microscope reveals a lot of things: like a horribly miscast Vincent D'Onofrio, a hidden hero, and the fact Big D no longer likes fun. This anniversary gift of a Shat The Movies episode takes us back to a simpler time when Playboy magazines were the center of young boys' world, girls pretended their hairbrushes were microphones, Thor didn't need big muscles, parents partied in skyscrapers with open windows, and blue clubs catered to teens who couldn't dance. Heathers (1988)
28/07/2020 Duración: 01h09minThese dark times call for dark movies, and '80s comedies didn't get any darker than "Heathers." The Winona Ryder and Christian Slater box office flop found a way to laugh at teenage suicide, bulimia, date rape, homosexuality, religion, hypocrisy, cynicism, sex, and murder in a way that made Big D blush. Gene Lyons and Ash Duke join Shat The Movies to relive their high school years, forced emotional outpourings, and Shannen Doherty's face on this episode commissioned by longtime listener Dan Fletcher and spooky podcaster Carmelita Valdez McKoy. How did Stanley Kubrick impact "Heathers"? Was the pep rally scene inspiration for "Smells Like Teen Spirit"? Why did young Ashley own a monocle? And most importantly: Is Heathers a truly groundbreaking film or just a cult classic. Find out in this week's "Shat The Movies." Mac and Me (1988)
24/07/2020 Duración: 01h01minCan a movie based on commercial relationships be so bad, it's excellent? That was the question posed by Jim B & family when he commissioned the 1988 rip-off of ET, #MacAndMe. Big D uses a sick day, so Rog invites his cohosts of @TheFloridaMen, Benny & Mister C to review the film that Paul Rudd turned into a cult classic through his numerous appearances on the Conan O'Brien Show. Benny admires the interior decorating skills of the young alien while filmmaker Mister C theorizes MAC's alien race went extinct due to vacuum cleaners. All three hosts feel cheated that neither Ronald McDonald nor the San Francisco 49ers showed up to their birthday parties. So, sit back, grab a straw, and enjoy the healthy products of our corporate overlords. It's the latest episode of STM. Clueless (1995)
16/07/2020 Duración: 01h16minCould the best adaptation of Jane Austen's "Emma" be the version that explores the lifestyles of over-privileged rich teenagers living in Beverly Hills during the mid-90s? That was the question raised by listener Sarah L when she commissioned the 1995 hit comedy, #Clueless. Ashley Schlafly joins Rog & Big D to break down the film that defined fashion trends throughout the decade. Ash fawns over Amy Heckerling's screenplay and the new direction of teen movies while Big D questions whether Cher's manipulation methods create an unhealthy double standard when it comes to gender roles. All three hosts get lost in the nostalgia of the soundtrack. So, let's hop in our Jeep, kiss our ex-stepbrother, and head to the valley for a ragin' house party...it's the latest episode of STM. Wayne's World (1992)
08/07/2020 Duración: 01h44sIf we sealed 90’s pop culture in a time capsule and opened it up 30 years later, the result would be a VHS tape of the 1992 film, #WaynesWorld. As a birthday present to himself, listener Steve W commissioned the that inspired numerous comedies throughout the decade. Classic features like “It’s Pat” and “Stuart Saves His Family”…..NOT! Rog & Big D record from their Mom's basement studio while reacquainting themselves with early 90’s vernacular such as “Schwing,” “Party On,” & “Ass Sphincter.” Big D revels in breaking the 4th wall while Rog gives credit to the real hero of the movie: Director Penelope Spheeris. Vision Quest (1985)
01/07/2020 Duración: 01h08minTeenage coming-of-age films saturated the 80's box office, but only one combined an oversexed virgin, wrestling singlets, and Madonna: #VisionQuest. Long time Shat the Movies listener Nelson commissioned the 1985 film that some have described as "Rocky w/ Nosebleeds." AEW Wrestling Superstar, QT Marshall (aka Mike Cuellari), accompanies Rog & Big D to breakdown Louden's journey. QT explains the insecurity of being in the ring wearing underwear while Rog finds himself strangely attracted to State Champion, Brian Shute. Big D rewrites the ending to lead into a much darker sequel. All three hosts wish they had a father figure like Elmo in their life. Forrest Gump (1994)
24/06/2020 Duración: 01h52minWe all agree that these are pretty turbulent times. Appropriately, it was with great anticipation that we circled our calendar for the 1994 Oscar-winning juggernaut, #ForrestGump. Commissioned by listener Joshua R, the film that solidified Tom Hanks as an American Icon was a welcomed respite from the cynical nature of today's movies. Kevin Bracket of Reel Spoilers joins Rog & Big D on a nostalgia trip through what some have called "a baby-boomer version of Disney's America." Kevin swoons over the double-disc soundtrack while Big D questions whether the song selections were too "Randy Newman-like" for his taste. Rog discloses his desire to go forth on an adventure with just his thoughts. All three hosts proclaim Sally Field deserved an award for her performance. Grease 2 (1982)
18/06/2020 Duración: 01h07minWhen it comes to cult musicals, we typically think of Rocky Horror Picture Show, Little Shop of Horrors, & This Is Spinal Tap. However, a little film about the T-Birds, Pink Ladies, and overt references to sexual intercourse has quietly become a new generational cult movie. No...not that Grease, we're talking about Grease 2! Listener Mike from Norfolk is part of that new Rydell High School crew that stopped hand-jiving and started bowling. He even went so far as to build a replica of the "Cool Rider's" Honda Scrambler. It was fate that he commission Shat The Movies to review his favorite obsession. Fellow Grease 2 enthusiast, Ashley Schlafly joins Roger & Big D to debate whether the sequel is better than the original. Ash swoons over the empowering female character of Stephanie, while Big D explains the rules of being a Pink Lady. Rog discounts Ash's favorite song as nothing more than a B-Side recording from Meatloaf. All three hosts cringe during the "Let's Do It For Our Country" performance. So, put

Léon: The Professional (1994)
10/06/2020 Duración: 01h08minWhen you want a hitman, you hire the best. When you want a review of your favorite 90's film, you hire Shat the Movies(?). That's the conclusion Mike from Quincy reached when he commissioned the 1994 English-language French action thriller, #TheProfessional. Shat on TV's Rookie of the Year, Ashley Schlafly joins Roger & Big D in Little Italy to follow a reserved Jean Reno, a sadistic Gary Oldman, and a younger-than-we-remembered Natalie Portman in a movie that was robbed by "Wild Reeds" at the 20th Cesar Awards. Ash explores the complexity of Matilda's relationship with Leon while Rog explores the purity symbolism of milk in classic cinema. Big D asks the question: "Is Leon slow, or is he just foreign?". Repo Man (1984)
26/05/2020 Duración: 01h05minListener Scott O was disappointed to see #RepoMan (1984) excluded from the Pantheon of Shat. As a result, he mailed in an envelope of money initially earmarked for his son's graduation to hear the Shat Crew review the coming-of-age film for suburban white punks. Rog and Big D steal a 1964 Chevy Malibu and cruise the streets of Los Angeles, searching for hidden messages of a movie that's best known for its surreal overdubs of profanity when broadcasting on basic cable. Rog praises the training program at Helping Hands Acceptance Corporation while Big D confesses his addiction to watching tow truck repossessions on YouTube. Kingpin (1996)
20/05/2020 Duración: 01h06minWith previous reviews of The Big Lebowski and Dumb & Dumber, STM listener Jake V felt the timing was right to commission the 1996 Farrelly Brothers' gutterball, Kingpin. Rog and Big D embark on a road trip through a memory montage that transports the duo to a simpler time when the local bowling lanes were as greasy as the snack bar pizza. Big D reminisces on his time spent in junior bowling leagues. Rog recollects the time Amish teenagers tried to lure him into an abandoned Pennsylvania cabin. The OG shat twosome fawn over the embodiment of coolness, Bill Murray. Plus, we explore proper ball fitting, prosthetic hand attachments, and whether or not Chris Farley would have been a better Ishmael. Crocodile Dundee (1986)
11/05/2020 Duración: 01h09minWhat would be worse? Getting attacked by a 16-foot crocodile...or enduring a cross country road trip while listening to the entire back catalog of Shat The Movies? This question was raised by a Canadian couple, Andrew & Sarah C., as part of their commission review of the 1986 hit, Crocodile Dundee. Roger, Big D, & Ashley embark upon an adventure into the rugged outback of the Northern Territory to review the movie that Aussie listener, Bruce describes as "...pretty accurate, for the most part." Rog finds comfort in the cultural similarities of his Floridian childhood, Big D explains the meaning of "Stubby Holder," and Ashley longs for the days of adventure journalism delivered in a tangible newspaper. All three share their encounters with Aussies in the wild. Plus, we examine high-fashion of the '80s, how to be #Crocwise, and which Shat Host could survive a 56-day walkabout in the bush of what Big D calls "Tropical Canada." p.s. - yes, we know Roger screwed up the story of Rod (not Ron) Ansell. C'mon,
