Trevor Steven, the player who scored the goal that produced arguably the loudest roar in the Grand Old Lady’s history, is Chris Beesley’s latest guest on Goodison Park: My Home. Steven netted the goal that clinched Everton’s place in the 1985 European Cup-Winners’ Cup final when he sealed the 3-1 win over Bayern Munich in what is widely regarded as Goodison Park’s greatest-ever night. Born in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Steven recalls his early football memories, growing up close to England’s border with Scotland, before getting his big break in the professional ranks at Burnley, where he played alongside a previous Goodison Park: My Home guest Martin Dobson. Having been snapped up by fellow North Easterner Howard Kendall for £300,000 in 1983, Steven’s first season on Merseyside finished with him delivering the cross for Andy Gray’s goal to clinch the 2-0 victory over Watford in the FA Cup final. The period covers the 12 months leading to July 2024 and represents an improvement on the £89.1m loss reported in the previous year. Described by Everton’s most-successful manager Howard Kendall as the Blues’ most-important signing since the Second World War, Peter Reid joins Chris Beesley for the latest episode of Goodison Park: My Home. Reid first played at ‘The Grand Old Lady’ when he was just 14 years old for Huyton schoolboys but back then he was a Liverpool fan. The midfielder underwent an emphatic conversion though following his transfer from Bolton Wanderers to Everton in 1982 and having helped the Blues lift the FA Cup in 1984, he was voted PFA Players’ Player of the Year by his fellow professionals in 1984/85 as the club enjoyed their best-ever season, winning the League Championship with five games to spare plus the European Cup-Winners’ Cup. Armando Broja has been pictured back in full training alongside his Everton team-mates in the latest batch of photographs to be released from Finch Farm. The on-loan Chelsea striker hasn’t featured in the first team since going off with an ankle ligament injury in the FA Cup third round tie against Peterborough United on January 9. Initially, new manager David Moyes admitted he was looking into the possibility of sending the Albania international back to Stamford Bridge to free up a potential domestic loan space given that the Blues had filled their two-man quota having also brought in Jack Harrison from Leeds United, but given that the issue wasn’t as serious as originally feared, there are now hopes that the 23-year-old could feature again this season. Martin Dobson, English football’s first £300,000 player, joins Chris Beesley as the latest guest on Goodison Park: My Home to relive Everton matters from the 1970s.  The 77-year-old, who has penned his own autobiography Dobo: For Club and Country, tells the story of how he went from being released by Bolton Wanderers as a teenager to an England international with Burnley and his record-breaking transfer to the Blues in 1974. The classy midfielder has a treasure trove of tails from an era when Everton had several near-misses: in the title race in Dobson’s first season, in an epic three-game League Cup final against Aston Villa and a notorious FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool when they were denied a Wembley trip by referee Clive Thomas’ controversial decision.  There are also plenty of more-enjoyable moments though as Dobo recalls captaining the Blues to victory in the ‘Andy King’ Merseyside Derby, the 6-0 romp against Chelsea when Bob Latchford reached 30 goals for the season and another Goodison game again

Everton extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to eight matches under David Moyes tonight. They played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux. Despite the two sides only being separated by one place in the table going into the contest, the result maintained the 10-point gap between the pair. It also saw the Blues go above Manchester United and West Ham United on goal difference in 14th. Jack Harrison fired Everton ahead on 33 minutes with his first goal of the season as his shot was deflected in off Matt Doherty but Marshall Munetsi restored parity for 17th-placed Wolves seven minutes later after Jarrad Branthwaite was unable to clear a ball into the box.
