PIM Webinar Series: Measuring food losses: a new methodology - 5/8/2018
08/05/2018 Duración: 01h52sPresenter: Eduardo Nakasone, Assistant Research Fellow, IFPRI and Assistant Professor, Michigan State University. The United Nations has recognized the importance of reducing food loss and waste in the Sustainable Development Goal target 12.3 to “halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses” by 2030. Despite broad interest in the problem, measurement of food loss and waste is problematical, especially in developing countries. In this webinar, we discuss a methodology to measure food losses developed by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) team working under the CGIAR Research Program on Policies, Institutions, and Markets (PIM). The survey-based methodology has three main innovations. First, it allows measurement across different nodes of agricultural value chains to pinpoint the locus of loss. Second, it includes the economic value of loss due to quality deterioration as well

PIM Webinar Series: Women in agriculture: Four myths
16/04/2018 Duración: 01h10minPIM Webinar on April 11, 2018, conducted by Cheryl Doss (University of Oxford), Agnes Quisumbing (International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)) and Ruth Meinzen-Dick (IFPRI). Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 on gender equality and women’s rights and at least 11 of the 17 SDGs require indicators related to gender dynamics. Despite the need for reliable indicators, stylized facts on women, agriculture, and the environment persist. During this webinar, presenters focused on four gender myths: 1. 70% of the world’s poor are women 2. Women produce 60 to 80% of the world’s food; 3. Women own 1% of the world’s land; and 4. Women are better stewards of the environment. More at http://bit.ly/GenderinAgMythsWebinar

IFPRI SPECIAL EVENT: Tales of yield improvement - 4/5/2018 - SFAN
09/04/2018 Duración: 06minClosing Remarks: Shenggen Fan, Director General, IFPRI. Yield growth is essential for people and the planet. But what should we breed and for what should we breed under a more erratic climate, growing natural resource scarcity and new disease threats? What is the role for better agricultural and food systems management and more adaptive institutions? Can yield growth help reduce environmental damages from agriculture, and help end hunger, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity? A distinguished set of experts will address these questions through a series of rapid-fire presentations to honor Mark Rosegrant’s work at IFPRI over the last 40 years.
