Being born without the lower portion of his spine he grew up in a community who never saw him different. Mae Thiew is one of those people who has the ability to fill your heart simply by her smile. The way she spreads love in some of the hardest of circumstances is extraordinary. Mae works with the forgotten and ignored children of northern Thailand, many of whom have HIV. She is the director and founder of the wonderful home in Thailand Baan Home Hug for the past 30 years. She has borne witness to stories which if I didn’t know better or I hadn’t witnessed first hand, I would question the validity of them. Mae battles with terminal cancer but her mantra of ‘I am strong’ means that she continues to defy medical rationale of her illness. Powered by love, driven by strength, focused on others in a way that few others do means this is a story that will stay with you long after listening. I know for me my life is changed because of the time I get to spend with Mae Thiew.

At 12 months of age Karni was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, her parents were told that she would never be able to walk and that she would not live past her teens. Defying the odds Karni competed at two Paralympic Games, 1996 and 2000, winning bronze in womens 50 m freestyle in Atlanta games, and bronze in womens 4 x 50m relay at the Sydney Games. But we actually didn’t dive into her experience as an elite athlete in this conversation. Instead we talked about life as a single parent, the judgement that she combats being a single parent in a wheelchair, and her drive to educate others about the importance of inclusion. Alyssa Azar followed in her father’s trekking footsteps and completed the Kokoda Track at the age of 8 - kick-starting a love of trekking, climbing, and smashing big goals. In 2016 Alyssa became the youngest Australian to summit Mt Everest at the age of 19, and then earlier this year, 2018 summited Everest again from the north side. Alyssa describes the experience of walking that final 700metres at Everest, and why even when faced with a gaol in sight that you can never take success for granted - and therefore how important it is to be fully present to the moment you are in.
