John the Baptist's warning to the Pharisees and Sadducees - and to us today - is absolutely necessary. He sees through the pretension and the pride and lies that we construct to bring ourselves false comfort and he’s going to be able to separate the wheat, the fruit of a life oriented toward God and toward repentance, from the chaff, the excess useless part of the wheat that gets turned into fuel for the fire and represents ourself righteousness. Advent 2022 (Part 1)Matthew 1:1-17// Matthew shows us that, more than entering the story of Israel, Jesus perfected it. Jesus succeeds where Israel fails. Jesus is the true Abraham who leaves a place of comfort to go forth in faith and find a home for his family, so that through him blessing might come into the whole world. He is the true David who fights the true giants of sin, Satan, and death on our behalf, and who will rule and reign with a kingdom that knows no end. Jesus is the one who brings home from our spiritual exile and gives us peace. Jesus is the true and better Abraham, the true and better David, and the true and better Israel. Thanksgiving - Psalm 107Psalm 107:1-32// When we look out on nature, we see God’s goodness everywhere. Whether it is the glory of the Palo Duro Canyon, the beauty of snow, the joy of music, the taste of pizza, the wonder of children, the majesty of the universe, we see the good blessings of God everywhere around us. These are all examples of gifts God gives to all freely which reveal his nature to us. But the one place we see the goodness of God most clearly is in the gift of his only son to save sinners. Nowhere do we see the goodness of God more on display than in the person and work of Jesus Christ. In Jesus we see the sum total of God’s goodness as he becomes a human, lives a life of complete obedience to God and then willingly goes to the cross to die and pay the penalty in the place of the disobedient. Romans: The Power and Glory of the Gospel (Part 30)Romans 15:14-33// Jesus is the one who was despised and rejected by men. He is the man of sorrows who has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. He is the one who was "pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities". At the cross, Jesus endured the "chastisement that brought us peace" (Isa 52:13—53:12). Yet, here in Romans 15, Paul is connecting his own ministry to that of the Suffering Servant of Isaiah 52 and 53. Is this blasphemy? No. Paul knows that to suffer for Christ is to suffer with Christ (Rom 8:17). He knows that it is in giving that we receive (Acts 20:35) and that in losing our lives, we find them (Matt 10:39). Yes, the mission of God is costly. But the mission of God is worth it because Jesus is worth it. He has redeemed us so that we might participate in his enduring mission of redemption. We think of Moses dividing the Red Sea, Elijah calling down fire from heaven, and Jesus rising from the dead. Miracles are important. And miracles can and do happen. But the primary way that the kingdom of God has advanced is through the simple faithfulness of the people of God as displayed in the profoundly practical and small moments of life. The kingdom of God advances when we speak the truth with one another in our disagreements, but we do so in a way that exudes love. We stand against the kingdom of darkness when we refuse to give way to bitterness and resentment. We exude the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit when we walk in grace and practice forgiving well and repenting well. We glorify God with one voice when we reject the temptation to judge one another or provoke one another into stumbling. We show the watching world a glimpse of the character of C

Romans: The Power & Glory of the Gospel (Part 28)Romans 14:1-12// Justification is the doctrine that we have been declared righteous through faith in Christ alone. We do not earn righteousness through our good works; we are made righteous through the perfect work of Jesus Christ. Justification means that for those who have faith in Jesus, the verdict of our final judgment has already been rendered because Christ has taken all condemnation for our sin and he has given the gift of his righteousness to all who trust in him. When we do not rest in justification alone, our hearts will try to find justification through other means. And one of false means of justification is walking in judgment upon others. We create a list of actions and beliefs that we believe makes us righteous and —it could be what we eat, what we drink, how we worship, or how we vote. Then, we compare ourselves to others based on that that list. But such a mentality is not justification on faith. We are not justified through what we eat or

Romans: The Power & Glory of the Gospel (B-Side)Isaiah 45:14-25// In Romans, Paul leans heavily on the prophet Isaiah and shows how Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of several different different "characters" in Isaiah. Jesus is the suffering servant; he is also the conquering king. Jesus is the mighty savior; he is also the righteous judge. How can Jesus be all of these things, especially when they seem opposed to each other? While we believe that God can be known, we also believe that he cannot be fully or completely known - but that everything we need to know about him for our salvation is found in the person and work of Jesus Christ. We are to practice godly submission alongside appropriate suspicion toward the kingdoms of men. We are to honor the authority of our governing officials. Still, we must be mindful that the government's authority is not the ultimate authority. We can seek to have a rightly ordered love for our nation in the form of a godly patriotism. But we are to be ever cautious of idolatrous nationalism that would seek to steal our heart's ultimate allegiance, highest love, and worship from Christ. Love is necessary, not a luxury. One of the greatest needs within the human soul is to be truly known and truly loved. That love is a gift that the church is meant to give to one another and to those we are inviting to be a part of our family of faith. For our love, as finite and failing as it is at times, is a central way of pointing unto the greater love that God has revealed in Christ. The love of God revealed to us in the gospel that is stronger than hate, stronger than sin, stronger even than the power of death. It is a love made possible only by the resurrection of the Son God. Parents cannot give their kids the perfect program of Christian discipleship that guarantees your child never strays from the faith, but parents can be committed to giving their children Jesus first and most above everything else. For children that are young and still at home, give them Jesus. For children that are grown and gone, give them Jesus. For children that are easy and pliable, give them Jesus. Like Israel walked through the desert for forty years, Jesus was tempted in the desert for forty days yet without sinning. The people of God are not called to be mere containers of the gospel; we are called to be conduits through which the power of the gospel flows. We are called not only to be beneficiaries of God's grace, but agents of that grace within the world around us. Romans: The Power & Glory of the Gospel (Part 20)Romans 9:1-2// If we read Romans 9 honestly, it is a passage that should break us. It is a passage that is mean to stretch our minds and challenge the tidy categories in which we want to organize our ideas about God. Romans 9 is a difficult passage to understand, but even more, what Romans 9 is saying is difficult for us to receive when we understand exactly what it is saying. Nevertheless, we believe with conviction that all Scripture is inspired by Holy Spirit. We believe that what God reveals is truth that stands above all truth. We believe even more that his truth sets us free, and that honestly, humbly, and determinedly wrestling with the truth of Scripture leads us to the truth of God’s unfathomable goodness. Even in the hardest parts of the Bible, we do not rest in our own wisdom or understanding - we rest in the kindness of his character, trust in the perfection of his wisdom, and worship in light of the love God displays to us in the cross of Jesus
