Pucks On Net

Eight hours after Team Canada defeated the Swedes 3-0 to win the gold medal, the gang gathers, sleep deprived and hung over from earlier in the morning.  We chat about our night watching the game at a bar on Granville open late (but not serving alcohol) and the great atmosphere it was despite the 4am start. It's also part 2 of our interview with Jim Robson and John Ashbridge. The long time voice of the Vancouver Canucks, Jim Robson and Vancouver Canucks and Giants public address announcer John Ashbridge join the podcast this week.  They sit down with Geeta, Sheila, Dave and Ryan to talk all about hockey in Vancouver over the years. From the old Western Hockey League Vancouver Canucks, to the failed expansion draft bid in 1967 and the protests that followed from Vancouver hockey fans, Jim Robson tells it all without missing a beat. Stories of streakers at the Pacific Coliseum during Hockey Night in Canada to Andre The Giant at the Penthouse looking to beat up Jim, the first half of this interview is fantastic! Jim also talks about a memorable night when the Philadelphia Flyers hopped the glass at the Coliseum and took on some fans, as well as talks about the troubles they faced calling the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals from deep inside the balcony in Madison Square Garden surrounded by New York fans in blue shirts! Live on tape from the Pacific Coliseum, the band is back together! Sheila, Dave and Ryan reform the three man podcast booth for the first time in over a month and shoot the breeze about hockey on the eve of the Olympic Break in the NHL. Dave & Ryan are finally back together holding down the Pucks on net podcast this week! Joined by good friend of the show China Dave sits down with them on Superbowl Sunday to talk about the week in hockey. Lots of banter around the Phoenix Coyotes becoming the Arizona Coyotes and the slow week around the Vancouver Canucks that was punctuated by a lot of former Manitoba Moose Vancouver Canucks players finally making their returns to Winnipeg. P Mac in the Street skypes to talk about a rather quiet, bed ridden week on his part as well. China Dave gives us the first installment of his series on playing beer league hockey in China. The inaugural story involves a big showdown between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Montreal Canadiens in mainland China (he was playing the role of PK Subban). Ryan is flying solo this week on the show. Up in Kelowna covering the Rockets for the WHL on Shaw. With no Dave, Sheila or Geeta, we turn to the boys from the WHL on Shaw for our weekly chat. Host Andy Neal and producers Grant and Dave sit with Ryan in room 244 of the Ramada Inn to talk about the WHL, the powerhouse Kelowna Rockets, the problems facing smaller market clubs and talking about their earliest exposure with the league. Sheila, Geeta and Ryan get together to talk about the biggest story in hockey this week: The Calgary Flames/Vancouver Canucks Line Brawl from Saturday night. Just two seconds into the game and ten game misconducts later, one of the strangest hockey games in recent memory began.  P Mac on the Street joins us (literally from the street) via Skype to give his take on the events on and off the ice and brings just how John Tortorella accessed the visitor's dressing room at Rogers Arena into question. The excitement dies down briefly and the girls chat about the sad break up of Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie. A very special Monday Night edition of Pucks on net and our favourite NHL beat reporter P Mac on the Street sits in with Dave and Ryan to discuss a whole lot of happenings in the NHL these days. Ryan talks about buying a random Pucks on net listener a beer at Roger's Arena during the Pittsburgh Penguins' visit to Vancouver last Tuesday and the gang dives into the Winnipeg Jets' problems and their new coach Paul Maurice. We hear the latest on the ongoing saga of David Booth and his position with the Vancouver Canucks. Where will he end up? On the third line, Utica or in another hockey sweater? We propose a bold idea that the Edmonton Oilers and Buffalo Sabres merge and become one team. It's happened before, it can happen again! The Christmas Break is over for the Pucks on net gang, Ryan, Dave and Sheila get together over a pot of coffee and the ending of the Sweden/Finland gold medal game during the World Juniors to discuss all that's happening in hockey right now, and there's alot!  We chat about the Winter Classic, the dull cast of characters in HBO 24/7 (except for Todd Bertuzzi of course!!!). We also talk about counterfeit NHL jerseys, the upcoming Sochi Olympics and not if, but when Uncle Marty Brodeur steals the net for Team Canada.  Finally, Sheila reads an excerpt from Jay Onrait's book 'Anchorboy' and Ryan tries ketchup chips for the first time! Recorded live during the Pucks on net Christmas party, this is a very fun episode. The whole Pucks on net gang are podcasting under one roof.  Microphone in one hand, rum and eggnog in the other, we sit down to talk about the holiday season. A bit of a slow weekend this week, that was until the big Thomas Vanek and Matt Moulson trade happened a few hours after recording this episode, but none the less, we chat about the likeable Calgary Flames and the many things not to like about the Buffalo Sabres. Afterwards, we chat about one of the worst teams in NHL history, the 1992/93 expansion Ottawa Senators. They won a measly 10 games that year. They assembled a lunch buck journeyman team and purposely lost in order to draft high the following year. The gang is back for a Sunday afternoon edition of Pucks on net! Dave, Geeta and Ryan get together to talk about what was a big week for goaltenders. Mike Smith scoring an empty net goal, Marty Biron retiring and all the happenings in the NHL early in the season.We also chat about our favourite NHL Entry Draft busts but before we can discuss the likes of Alex Daigle and Pavel Brendl or Pat Falloon, Geeta shares with us a tale of a first date she had on Friday night and tells of the worst (and equally hilarious) first date anyone may ever have! We even revisit the Queen's 2001 visit to Vancouver and Owen Nolan's desire not to shake her hand! A really fun conversation this week, we get together on a foggy Vancouver day with the Canucks and Bluejackets game on in the background.

The gang decides to have the first Pucks on net at the movies episode this week!  After the very exciting first week of NHL regular season action, Ryan and Dave decide to kick their feet up and watch a classic, The Mighty Ducks! Sheila was once again missing this week, disappearing mere minutes before we began to record. Look for her face on milk cartons in your local grocer tomorrow! The first week of the NHL Season was too much for us too handle here at Pucks on net, thus the slight delay in recording this episode.Sheila is missing this week, so friend of the show Geeta joins Dave and Ryan to co-host the first Pucks on net of the 2013-14 NHL Regular Season.  We chat about the new mandate to make Sidney Crosby a regular Joe six pack and chat about new friend of the show, Alex Auld. We discuss Rick Nash's six degrees of separation with Ed Belfour and then dive into our discussion about the delicate psyche of the goaltender. It's the most majestic night of the year! The REAL NHL Awards show here on Pucks on net. The esteemed Pucks on net panel get together to give out the awards the NHL seems to neglect year after year. Ryan, Dave and Sheila sit down, in their finest rented tuxedos and formal wear to chime in with their opinions on just who should walk away with the awards.
