While residing on the small Pacific island of Pohnpei in the 1990s, Carole Nervig discovered that a recent brush fire had exposed hundreds of previously unknown petroglyphs carved on gigantic boulders. This portion of the megalithic site called Pohnpaid was unknown even to Pohnpei’s state historic preservation officer. The petroglyphs were unlike others from Oceania, so she began investigating and comparing them with petroglyphs and symbols from around the world.She documents her discoveries on Pohnpei, revealing how the archetypal symbols of the Pohnpaid petroglyphs have exact counterparts in other ancient cultures and universal motifs throughout the world, including the Australian Aborigines, the Inca in Peru, the Vedic civilization of India, early Norse runes, and Japanese symbols. In his book, My Science, My Religion: Academic Papers, Michael A. Cremo explores the relationship between science and religion, in terms of his specific scientific and religious commitments. Many of the papers in this book deal with archeological evidence for extreme human antiquity, consistent with the Puranic histories. Other papers explore the history of archeology in India. In his book Human Devolution, Cremo presented a Vedic alternative to the current theory of human origins. Some of the papers in My Science, My Religion are related to this topic. Joseph Emet joins us again to talk with Dr. Zohara about meditation in general, but specifically walking meditation.  They also review his 2016 book Finding the Blue Sky: A Mindful Approach to Choosing Happiness Here and Now, TarcherPerigee, 2016.  In this book Emet recounts his own journey toward wellbeing and happiness through mindfulness. These steps are outlined clearly in the book: Each chapter starts with a Zen story, and continues with a set of exercises for applying that teaching to real-life situations. Like Jon Kabat-Zinn, Joseph had his introduction to the mindfulness tradition through Zen. He trained with Roshi Robert Aitken in Hawaii, and then continued with Thich Nhat Hanh in Plum Village (France). At the end of his training, Thich Nhat Hanh appointed him a teacher in his tradition of Zen.Joseph Emet started the Mindfulness Meditation Centre in 1997. Since then, he has trained several thousand people in mindfulness practices in large and small groups, for organizations, and in private sessions.
