Many former Purdue men’s basketball coach Gene Keady’s top players paid tribute to their former coach in this Zoom cast on April 24, 2023. Keady was selected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame during the Final Four weekend a few weeks back, becoming just the fourth individual associated with Boilermaker basketball to be named to the Naismith. Keady joins coach Piggy Lambert and two of Lambert’s best players, John Wooden and Charles “Stretch” Murphy.  On the Zoom cast was a virtual who’s who of the Keady Era: Brian Cardinal (1997-2000); Greg Eifert (1981-84), Troy Lewis (1985-88), Cuonzo Martin (1992-95),  Brandon McKnight (2002-05). Steve Reid (1983-85), Glenn Robinson (1992-94), Steve Scheffler (1987-90),  Everette Stephens (1985-88) and former assistant coach Bruce Weber (1981-98). Keady tuned in for much of the proceedings and enjoyed the stories and recollections of many who made his quarter-century run at Purdue remarkable. 

In this weekend's episode, GoldandBlack.com's Mike Carmin and Tom Dienhart share thoughts with Alan Karpick on Purdue hoops and football, respectively. Carmin's topics include Zach Edey's next move, coach Gene Keady's selection to the  Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and coach Katie Gearlds big haul in the transfer portal. Former Boilermaker standout forward Matt Kiefer turns 40 today (April 22, 2023) and shares his big day from his home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The father of two, who is about to be the father of four at the end of the summer, talks about his Purdue career and much more. Kiefer, the first team MVP of the Matt Painter Era, was academic All-Big Ten thrice (2004-06). A native of Evansville, Indiana, Kiefer played for coaches Gene Keady and Matt Painter before having a stint in international professional basketball in Europe. An engineering major at Purdue, Kiefer now works in real estate development with his young family. 

The Boilermakers enter the final week of spring practices under first-year coach Ryan Walters. Eyes are on the field, but also on the portal. Let’s talk football on Gold and Black Radio.

After finishing up the regular season with two straight wins, Purdue is on to the Big Ten Tournament, then the NCAA. The Boilermakers held on to beat Illinois Sunday, winning in the last minute after leading by two-dozen in the second half. Now, it’s either Rutgers or Michigan in Chicago Friday. In recent memory, Purdue football has made hay with walkons, and Jake Thieneman is one of those success stories. We caught up with Jake on his 6 3/4 birthday as he was born on Leap Day, 1996. The former Boilermaker safety who played from 2014-18, earning a starting role which began in the Bucket Game in 2016, now lives in Denver, Colorado with his brother Brennan (another former walk-on).
