To alleviate the risk Lupin harmed anyone during his transformation, Dumbledore planted the Whomping Willow and created the tunnel to the Shrieking Shack, where Lupin was placed before he transformed and remained until he was back to human. Lupin made friends at Hogwarts: Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew, and James Potter. And they discovered what was happening to him and learned how to transform, each as a different Animagus to accompany their friend during his werewolf transformations.
