Instead of debuting in Superman's third outing, the Salkinds made her own film featuring Oscar-winning stars such as Peter O'Toole and Faye Dunaway. They also chose to have her fight a wannabe occultist instead of a comic book-style villain. Needless to say, this wasn't a winning formula, and the film bombed at the box office and received abysmal reviews causing Supergirl to go dark for 20 years.
