As our children were learning to drive we made a determination that they should learn how to drive a stick shift. So, each time a child was about 15 1/2 years old I would take them to a nearby church parking lot and would begin the instruction. For me growing up I learned how to drive a stick shift on the farm with the farm trucks and tractors out on the open fields. If you've ever driven a stick shift car you know that there are a series of gears, and when the car is not in gear, or when it is in neutral, then the car doesn't move. I would go through the gears with each child, and practice going from neutral into first gear, and the car would begin moving.. This was generally accompanied with a lot of sudden jolts and jerky actions on the car. Over time the transition from the car not moving, to moving got smoother. We went to the church parking lot many times with each child and practiced driving the car. As you know when the car is in neutral it doesn't move much. It can certainly coast a bit, but it canno
