  The northern ten tribes of Israel had become apostate. Worship of the two golden calves set up by Jeroboam had degraded the nation and opened the gateway for the worship of Baal and Ashtaroth. They turned away from the living God to worship images of wood covered with gold and silver; to soothsayers and necromancy; and to witches and warlocks. Their moral depravity became so disgusting it even included female and male temple prostitution. The southern nation of Judah was embracing similar moral depravity and spiritual idolatry, so God called the prophet Isaiah to warn them. “Alas, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a brood of evil doers, children who are corrupters! They have forsaken the Lord, they have provoked to anger the Holy One of Israel, they have turned away backward” (Isaiah 1:4 NKJV).
