After Terminator Salvation failed to garner enough profits to warrant a sequel--the studio that newly acquired the property decided to do a fresh reboot. While this film draws upon the original source material--it goes in a wild new direction no Terminator fan could have imagined. So in some ways it is a sequel but it's also a remake/reimagining. At the time considered the most scorned film in the franchise--now upon it's fifth anniversary--most viewers have softened on this light-hearted take.
