Rev. Sean Kilgo, pastor at the Northeast Kansas Lutheran Partnership, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Mark 1:1. Although Mark’s Gospel account is shorter than the other three, the Word that the Holy Spirit inspired him to write must not be overlooked. Mark is mentioned often in the book of Acts and epistles of the New Testament as a companion and coworker of Paul and a son of Peter. It is likely this connection to Peter and the apostle’s preaching that led Mark to write the Gospel that bears his name. He probably wrote it in Romer after Matthew and Luke had written their Gospel accounts. Mark structures his Gospel account around three key confessions of Jesus as the Son of God: by himself in the very first verse, by the Father’s voice at the Transfiguration, and by the centurion upon Jesus’ death. Mark wants us to see Jesus as the Son of God as the One who was crucified for us.
