A while back, I combed through all my Northern Soul tracks and ended up making two mixtapes out of it by pairing Northern Soul with early rap and reggae. Alas, here is a mix of just the Soul joints. Many of these tracks will be familiar to the heads, but for anyone looking for a quick primer, let this mix serve as a bit of a Northern Soul 101. I first heard the term Northern Soul in the early 2000s while watching a one-hit wonder show on VH1 that mentioned "Tainted Love" as a song the members of Soft Cell used to dance to as teenagers in discotheques. A few years later, I was watching a documentary on rave culture, and there was Soul again. I was hooked. It turns out that for every Motown hit we all know and love, there were probably 50 copycat bangers that never made it to the radio and ended up coveted by British DJs in the late '70s.
