Sinopsis

I first heard the term Northern Soul in the early 2000s while watching a one-hit wonder show on VH1 that mentioned "Tainted Love" as a song the members of Soft Cell used to dance to as teenagers in discotheques. A few years later, I was watching a documentary on rave culture, and there was Soul again. I was hooked. It turns out that for every Motown hit we all know and love, there were probably 50 copycat bangers that never made it to the radio and ended up coveted by British DJs in the late '70s. Instead of my planned 70-minute Soul set, I ended up with two parts. For part 1, I went in with early Hip Hop, inspired by "The Get Down". Between parts 1 and 2, you'll hear selections of Northern Soul, very early Rap, and sweet old Reggae. The connection being these were all relatively overlapping urban jump-ups that spawned lasting scenes. Part 2 is on the way. Until then, allow me to rock so viciously that all the fly ladies will admire me... Side A Shirley Ellis - Soul Time Gloria Jones - Tainted Love Johnny Ta
