Exodus 19:5-6 The Lord said, “Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to me. And you will be my kingdom of priests, my holy nation.” When God spoke these words to Moses, it was exactly two months since the people had left Egypt. They were getting used to their new life in the desert and God wanted to establish the basis of their relationship with him. He took Moses up Mount Sinai to give him the foundational principles upon which their new life should be built and, at the heart of it, was the word ‘covenant’. God wanted to care for his people and provide for them on the basis of a two-way relationship. God would care for them but, at the same time, they needed to understand their own responsibilities before God.
