1 John chapter 4 is a letter from the apostle John to a community of Christians, in which he encourages them to discern between true and false teachers and to love one another as evidence of their relationship with God. Verse 1 begins with a warning to test the spirits, or teachings, that are being preached. John instructs his readers to discern whether a teaching comes from the Spirit of God or from a false spirit. He emphasizes that false prophets and false teachings are prevalent, and that we must exercise discernment in our spiritual lives. Verse 2 highlights the key belief of Christianity: that Jesus Christ came in the flesh. John affirms that anyone who confesses this truth is from God, and anyone who denies it is not from God.
