Have you tried several things in order to get the spaciousness you desire in your career? You might be trying to make sure you have the publication results that you know you need in order to keep hitting your goals and to keep making your impact on your field and in the world. People try a lot of things in order to hit these goals, but in order to design a career that you love and serves you best, you need to get clear on what exactly that career looks like for you. In this bonus episode, I share a technique that you can use to start to shift away from the cultural norms inside of academia and do something counterintuitive. The technique asks you to think of three adjectives you would use to describe your career if you could have it your way. Choosing 3 adjectives to describe your career is a great first step in designing a career you love and that has longevity. Using those 3 adjectives, ask yourself what that kind of professor would do. In this bonus episode, we’ll dive into something that might seem the opposite of what you've been believing all of this time: your publishing problem is not time. If you're a professor and you have a disruptive perspective on your field, and you have a big backlog of papers, and you just haven't been able to sit down and sort through it all to knock them out, your gut reaction might be to think you just don’t have enough time. Are you still exhausted after getting tenure and don’t know why things haven’t changed? Feeling like you’ll never not be tired? I’ve got 3 steps to take to help you take control. If you are exhausted, you are doing too much. You might have thought that gaining tenure would help, but if you’re like so many of the academics I work with, you have probably discovered just the opposite! After pushing so hard, for so long, a lot of people crash after receiving tenure.  You might be grateful for the stability of tenure (and hopefully a raise!) but in order to make a positive change in how your career feels, you’ll need to make some changes in how you approach it. Tenure doesn’t automatically solve your exhaustion problem, but with intention, you can. What if being a leader in academia doesn’t have to mean taking on an administrative role? What if it means so much more than that? When we hear people talking about leadership in academia, what they often mean is admin. Leadership to your institution probably means a department chair or associate director, or other role that helps the university to function.
