Each month we release a new full-length album right on our podcast.Today we listen to our album God From The Machine [Improv No. 12]. This album was recorded from March 10 to 14, 2020 to a cassette eight track. I made up the songs while I played. All the overdubs were done as fast as possible before moving on. I filled up two cassette tapes. Everything on those tapes is on the album in the order it was recorded. I call it an "improv album."Thanks for listening. The guitar and vocals were recorded on my phone in one sitting on March 12, 2020. I wrote the songs while I played them. All the overdubs were done later in March and April on my laptop. I edited a couple of the tracks, removing a minute or so total from the album. I titled and the numbered the songs while I was recording them and I've kept them in that sequence. This one explores various themes like waking up, recovering from trauma, sensemaking, transcending divisive politics, and trying to heal from your own failures and miseries. This album was recorded from November 12th to November 20th, 2018. I recorded to a Yamaha cassette four track. I filled three tapes (adding up to 88 minutes). Everything I did on those tapes is on the album in the order it was recorded. I wrote the songs as I was performing them. When I got stuck I would start over or punch in where I gave up. All overdubs were done in as few takes as possible before moving on to the next song. I tried to follow the same three basic rules when making each song: 1. Write only about things that are significant to you 2. Don't say anything you straight up disagree with 3. Be completely willing to fail I call the result an "improv album." I have made several more since and I'm releasing them regularly. I used a Yamaha cassette four track. I filled two tapes (adding up to 44 minutes). Everything on those tapes is on the album in the order it was recorded.Parts [Improv No. 5] comes from a very a difficult time–as they all do, I guess. What I've come to value about this process is that many of the issues I'm confronting in these songs have resolved or improved in some way since making it. That is, in part, because of writing about them in this way. Can they then be of some use to others?
