  • Episode 34: A Brew Hope

    29/09/2018 Duración: 52min

This week we're revisiting Rochester! Haley's already feeling a little spooky so she'll be talking exclusively about Mount Hope cemetery and its most famous/interesting residents (no offense to the rest of the people buried there...) Also we discuss a newer brewery in the area, as well as another Rochester brewery that makes a beer based off of a well-known mass-produced beer.Music: "Low Bridge" by the Rust Belt BrigadeBecome a patron! It could only cost you $1 a month, and it goes towards our beer funds, and also we'd really love you for it! • Episode 33: Drinking Hops

    21/09/2018 Duración: 01h28min

Hey there! This is a special pre-recorded episode that we recorded with the guys from What the Hops at Big Ditch during the Packet re-release! Regrettably, there isn't a ton of history in this episode, and that's mainly because we were going with What the Hops' style of podcasting: just shooting the shit. We hope you enjoy, and we'll be back next week with your regularly-scheduled history podcast (brewed for your enjoyment.) Happy Buffalo Beer Week! #COLLABORATIONCheck out our friends from What the Hops! Music: "Low Bridge" by the Rust Belt BrigadeBecome a patron! It could only cost you $1 a month, and it goes towards our beer funds as well as our ability to up our production value, and also we'd really love you for it! • Episode 31: Music To Our Beers

    07/09/2018 Duración: 01h02min

This week we're celebrating Buffalo's music scene to get in the spirit of Music is Art, the nonprofit started by a member of one famous Buffalo-based band. When you think of music and entertainment in Buffalo, you can't not think about the Theatre District, or its centerpiece: Shea's Performing Arts Center. Shea was a super busy guy who seriously LOVED entertainment. If you're not driving, take a sip for every theatre of his that Haley mentions in this episode.TL;DL: Everything burns down *fire emoji*. • Episode 30: Throwback Thirty

    01/09/2018 Duración: 01h13min

It's our thirtieth episode! You know what they say: 30 is the new 20! So for this, our thirtieth episode, we've decided to make our own little "clip-isode" where we go over our last 29 episodes (and the minisodes) and bring up some stuff that's come up since the episode has come out. Haley does do a classic deep-dive into something historic (should we tell you what it is?) Alright fine, it's the Buffalo Central Terminal! We just won't tell you where it comes in. • Episode 29: Keep On Capen On

    24/08/2018 Duración: 59min

This episode's for anyone going back to school this week coming up: this is our University at Buffalo episode! (Probably one of many, because there's a ton of history behind the school.) Consider this our most general UB episode, because Haley goes over the founding of the school and how the two main campuses got their start. Troy does a deep-dive on Capen Hall and Haley talks about her UB experience back in good ol' 2014, for which we have a moment of silence for Yik Yak.To hear the unedited version of this episode, as well as getting to hear the new patron-only special secret that we talk about on this show, become a patron! Also, join our new Facebook group!Music: "Low Bridge" by The Rust Belt BrigadeThings mentioned:"Best Iced Coffee in Buffalo" Step Out Buffalo"Tracing the path of UB's North Campus" UB Reporter, Kevin FrylingUB Library's University Archives"A Rat in a Maze: Student Attitudes Towards the Design of UB’s Amherst Campus, 1968-1985." • Episode 28: Olm Sweet Olm

    17/08/2018 Duración: 43min

This episode is a little bit sloppier than our usual product--we blame recording at 10 pm and pre-gaming at New York Beer Project. Anyway, this is our official Frederick Law Olmsted episode! Olmsted played a huge role in making Buffalo a one-of-a-kind city; what he would call "the Best Planned City in the World." Haley discusses the three parks he designed for Buffalo and the vision he had for each of them--and the effect that the Buffalo expressway system has had on each of them. (You'll find out here that we have about as much passion about buildings as we do about parks.) To hear the unedited version of this episode, become a patron! (I'm serious. This episode unedited is very rough/hilarious and would be worth paying for.) • Episode 27: Brewiston

    11/08/2018 Duración: 49min

You didn't think we forgot about you, did you? We're a day late on our episode drop but we're sure it's worth it!This week, Lewiston, NY is the focal point of the show! Along with its rich history and beautiful views, Lewiston is now home to a great place to drink freshly brewed beers! We got our hands on a Bourbon Barrel-Aged Quadrupel (thanks to our Patron Billy Jean) by Brickyard Brewing Company!Expect our usual Drinking Points chatter: old buildings, influential individuals, and great beer. We give a little more information on what's behind the barrel aging process and we share every detail on our tasting sheet for this one. Cheers! • Episode 26: You Got That Wright

    03/08/2018 Duración: 50min

Here's a fun drinking game: take a drink every time the word "right" or "Wright" is said in this episode. (Actually, don't. That's not drinking responsibly.)Well, if you know us, I'm sure you know by now this is our Frank Lloyd Wright episode! (Maybe the first of several, who knows.) In this episode we discuss one of Wright's most well-known designs, made for the man he called his best friend: Darwin D. Martin. In addition we talk about a few other Wright works in Buffalo, and we find out that Haley probably cares more about old buildings than people. And an added bonus: we start a new Untappd segment, which has yet to be named, starring the beer of the episode; Frank by Community Beer Works!Music: "Low Bridge" by the Rust Belt Brigade; "Swing Time" by Music by Pedro (Youtube)*The Rust Belt Brigade are playing at 810 Meadworks on 8/4 at 9PM!To hear the unedited version of our episodes (as well as bonus content) become one of our patrons! https://www.patreon.com/drinkingpointsThings Mentioned:The Winslow H

  • Episode 25: Cars, Bikes, and... Beer

    27/07/2018 Duración: 53min

In this episode, Troy takes the reins while Haley takes an accidental vacation day (don't worry, she's still here.) While Haley was working, Troy took a trip to Buffalo's Pierce Arrow Museum, where he learned a bunch about old cars and BIKES! And this museum just so happens to be down the street from Buffalo's first brewery since Iroquois closed in the 70s, Flying Bison Brewing Company! • Minisode 2: Seven One Six

    20/07/2018 Duración: 44min

In this minisode, we're celebrating 7/16! Does it count as a minisode if it's still 40 minutes long? We like to think so. But unlike our usual beer-drinking selves, we're celebrating by drinking local kombucha by Barrel and Brine (go ahead, call us hipsters.) Haley discusses the history of phone numbers and area codes, and Troy goes on a series of Buffalo-based tangents that he's been waiting forever to unleash. • Episode 24: Find Your Hoppy Place

    13/07/2018 Duración: 01h01min

In this episode, we go over our weekend road trip through Western New York and discuss the colorful history of a few towns that we passed through: one that is known as the "birthplace of WNY", another that was the birthplace of the author of the Pledge of Allegiance, and a town that has not one, but two, correctional facilities! Also, we bring back one of OUR favorite segments (we hope it's yours too): WHAT COULD'VE IT BEEN NAMED?The purpose of this road trip was to find our "hoppy" place at Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, NY, which was obviously amazing; but being in Watkins Glen, of course, means that we had to check out the local beer scene. Watkins Glen is the home of Rooster Fish Brewing, New York's first Farm Brewery, so we drank a flight (as one does) and also managed to find some of their beer to drink on the show. Although the episode states that Rooster Fish was NYS’s first Farm Brewery; another beer we drank today by Good Nature Brewing from Hamilton, NY says THEY’re the first Farm Brewery in the s

  • Episode 23: Need Some Ice For That Burn?

    06/07/2018 Duración: 01h08min

Ah, Canada and the U.S.A. They gained their independence the same week in July (almost 100 years apart) and they’ve been friends since the very beginning right? WRONG! *thunder crashes*The year is 1812 and Congress declares war on Canada! Not really, they declared war on Great Britain who had control of Canada. Forts were built, destroyed, and rebuilt. The same went for entire cities! And it’s been so damn hot here that we thought, “Hey, let’s talk about the burning of Buffalo.” Beer wise, we chat a bit about the oldest breweries of both the U.S. and Canada and we drink beers from four different breweries that we’re PRETTY SURE we haven’t mentioned on the show before! (Two American, two Canadian.)So grab a beer, sit down, and have a listen eh!

  • Episode 22: This Episode is the (Coffee) S**t

    29/06/2018 Duración: 01h02min

We say it every week: we’re a history podcast, brewed for your enjoyment. This week, we talk local brews of a different sort: coffee! A building occupied by one of our favorite coffee spots has a lot of history behind it. Join us as we talk about how we love our local coffee scene as much as our local beer scene. In the spirit of our topic, we’re drinking a couple of different coffee-infused beers. In addition, we give you a little TMI about what coffee does to the body...we hope you're not too shy. • Episode 21: Ruby Red Jacket

    22/06/2018 Duración: 55min

In this episode we delve into a Buffalo historical figure who Haley has been super excited to talk about: Red Jacket! As expected, any talk involving post-European Native American history can get a little serious, but we promise it's not too much of a bummer! We even get a little spooky and discuss a possible Buffalo curse? And for the beer... well, that would be another curse of the Buffalo/Western New York area: we're drinking Genny Screamers. If you don't know what those are, you're gonna find out today! And an extra tidbit: we talk about Resurgence's new can releases, specifically Peter B. Porter and Conehead IPA, which we're super pumped about!(Sorry there's a lot of car/plane noises in the background. It was hot as a really hot thing so we had the windows open for the first half of the episode...then there's birds, which is a little less annoying)Music: "Low Bridge" by the Rust Belt BrigadeIf you enjoy listening to us, you'll *love* listening to our unedited episodes, available to all patrons. • Episode 20: Coop Du Jour

    15/06/2018 Duración: 48min

This week, we stumbled upon an episode topic by accident (as we tend to do) and revisited Buffalo's Old First Ward at the Barrel Factory, home of one of Buffalo's newest breweries, Pressure Drop Brewing! This place is really awesome, and hits all of our "good place" vibes. They don't make barrels here anymore (yet?) but they do push out some serious beer, as well as spirits and kombucha. In addition, we touch on the growing trend of neighborhoods, such as the Old First Ward, going "micro-local," which we're obviously here for 100%.To hear the unedited version of this episode (full of gross burps and a minute discussion about South Park that wasn't exactly our most professional moment) become one of our patrons! https://www.patreon.com/drinkingpoints(Also we frigged up and forgot to thank our patrons this week. • Episode 19: Thicc Man

    08/06/2018 Duración: 44min

We're back everybody! (Congratulations to Troy for coming up with the episode name this week!) This episode has been in the works since the beginning of the project, and here we are finally doing it! Take a listen as we cover the history of Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory and one of their many notable creations; the first crash test dummy. Then we drink Trial By Wombat - a hazy IPA by Thin Man Brewery. How does the history and the beer crossover? • Minisode 1: A Bleu-Collar Town

    02/06/2018 Duración: 26min

So yeah, I know we said we weren't going to have a new episode this week. But first of all, this is a minisode--don't get it twisted. Second, we're workaholics. You should've expected this. In this minisode, we casually discuss the lore behind two of Buffalo's biggest food legacies: the chicken wing, and the beef on weck.Music: "The Last 9 Years" by the Rust Belt Brigade (I said rendition in the episode out of habit. 25/05/2018 Duración: 01h02min

This week we recorded on location at Big Ditch Brewing Company! We feature two of their beers, Beautiful River Farmhouse Saison and Electric District Pilsner. Check out this episode to hear our favorite (and most likely completely untrue) story about the origin of the naming of our city: Buffalo. Also, hear a bit about how the power of the Niagara River and Niagara Falls was harnessed and where they decided to send the first dose of electricity once they flipped the switch!(Also, wait around until about 40 minutes in, where you can hear a bit of our interview with the president of Big Ditch, Matt Kahn!)To hear the unedited version of this episode (as well as the full interview with Matt Kahn, and more fun things coming up soon) please become one of our patrons! https://www.patreon.com/drinkingpointsMusic: "Low Bridge" by the Rust Belt BrigadeThings mentioned in this episode:What are Queen Cities? The New Wonder of the World by A.E.
