All too often, the term "virtue signalling" is tossed out to dismiss statements made in good faith by people as they become aware of the breadth of possible experiences beyond their own privileged outlook. Public expressions of a commitment to inclusive values shouldn't be dismissed without evidence of hypocrisy. Unfortunately, accusations of "virtue signalling" are usually more likely to be backed by the accuser's delusions of supernatural mind-reading or fortune-telling abilities.It can also be infuriating or discouraging to be told off for having an imperfect or incomplete understanding of a situation one tries to speak out against when we are trying to become allies to a cause.That said, we fear that this conversation about virtue signalling might include a bit too much virtue signalling.
