Gray is a white Australian woman who grew up wearing the niqab, memorized the entire Quran, and briefly lived in Somalia. As the daughter of a Sunni Muslim convert, Nik was raised in a very pro-jihadist, anti-West household. Today, she has left the adopted religion of her family and speaks out as an unapologetic, freethinking ex-Muslim—but she can still rattle off Quranic verses in Arabic better than most native Arabic speakers, as you will hear. A young Saudi ex-Muslim woman, Rahaf Al-Qunun, escaped her family while they were on a trip to Kuwait, and fled to Thailand, en route to Australia where she planned to apply for asylum. Thai authorities detained her, ready to ship her back to her family, where she would face almost certain death. When she started tweeting about her situation, it took less than 24 hours for her story to become a media firestorm. The world's ex-Muslim community—more united than ever—brought mass attention to the story in real time, leading to features in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, the BBC, and CNN.
