  • Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993)

    08/02/2022 Duración: 53min

The last time Shat The Movies took on a Mel Brooks movie, Big D spoiled Roger's and Gene's fun with a grumpy wipe score. Will "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" be a parody redemption, or will Dick Ebert's "Spaceballs" gloom spread to the rest of the Shat Crew?  In this episode, commissioned by Hot Sauce Steve, we discuss who Mel Brooks jokes are for, the eternal hotness of Cary Elwes, why amazing songs make comedies even better, how many callbacks is too many callbacks, a young Dave Chappelle, a spicy Amy Yasbeck, an incredible Dom DeLuise, and what happened to the "Robin Hood" writing team after "Men in Tights." • It (1990)

    02/02/2022 Duración: 01h13min

Shat The Movies is no stranger to Stephen King movies, but we've never done a miniseries before. "It" taught us there's nothing more shat-tastic than mixing television icons like John Ritter, Harry Anderson, Richard Thomas, and Tim Reid with the horrifically bad TV production value of the '90s. But Hot Sauce Steve's commission wasn't all laughs. There were real scares: Parents not seeing the terrors unleashed upon the children of Derry; Tim Curry's unforgettable portrayal of Pennywise the clown; and of course late '80s home decor.  In this episode, the Shat Crew discuss whether Bill Skarsgard's 2017 Pennywise was better, whether the golden age of communal TV viewing is over, if racial slurs are OK on network broadcasts, and what qualifies as a fat kid. • Alien (1979)

    26/01/2022 Duración: 57min

Many '80s babies first met xenomorphs in 1986's "Aliens," but there just something special about the 1979 Ridley Scott masterpiece that started it all. It's more suspenseful, more thought-provoking, more groundbreaking. That doesn't mean we can't laugh at it. Face it: Mother is just a room of blinky lights, the ovamorphs look like lady parts, the crew of the Nostromo is hilarously reckless, and the chest burster kinda resembles a demented Muppet. Kicking off Hot Sauce Steve's 5 weeks of Shat The Movies commissions, "Alien" inspires the Shat Crew to discuss Disneyworld's Great Movie Ride, Ripley's choice in underwear, why dogs are better that cats in space, and sexy milk people. • The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988)

    19/01/2022 Duración: 58min

With a joke every 10 seconds, "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!" is considered by many the Gold Standard when it comes to '80s comedies. The gags are nonstop and forever burned into our brains, but is this 30-year-old movie based on a single-season TV show still funny? That depends on whether you like jokes about loud urination, tigers mauling baseball players, ballistic missiles driving into fireworks shops, and full-body condoms. We do. Other topics in this episode of Shat The Movies include the carefree vibe of the '80s, anti-montage parody montages, Ricardo Montelban's cool, Priscilla Presley's performance, what it means to let a joke breathe, and O.J. Simpson: hot or not? • An American Werewolf in London (1981)

    12/01/2022 Duración: 01h02min

It's another Shat The Movies horror-comedy, but this time we have an '80s classic. Longtime listener Rob T. reached out from across the pod to commission the 1981 John Landis masterpiece, "An American Werewolf in London." Big D's the star this week as we get more Ebert Animal Tips for Safety, hear why he thinks the British make the best horror movie victims, marvel at what it takes to convince Dick a film is a comedy, and learn how to use apartment tours to woo women. In this episode, we also cheer the practical effects (that transformation scene ... woof), wish for a Naughty Nina spinoff, discover what Bob Dylan and Michael Jackson have in common, and uncover the secret messages about Jewish life in an Anglo world. Plus, Gene and Ash conspire to leave their giant co-host behind in the event of a wolf attack. • Masters of the Universe (1987)

    05/01/2022 Duración: 57min

Some commissioners present Shat The Movies with films they admire, hoping for low wipe scores and eternal glory in the Pantheon of Shat. Others serve us straight from toilet, understanding their favorite films are turds and deserve a whole roll of TP. Listener Will C. is the latter. We're kicking off 2022 with "Masters of the Universe," a movie that makes "Star Wars" look like irrefutable science and makes "Conan the Barbarian" feel Oscar-worthy. This one's a real battle between our love of campy schlock and the hard truth that big budgets don't always mean good cinema. Was the Sorceress perfection or pointless? Should the movie have focused on Earth or Eternia? Was Dolph Lundgren a god or a goober? Is this Courteney Cox in her prime, and how do you pronounce Frank Langella? The Shat Crew debates all this and more while agreeing on one thing: Fuck Gwildor. • Ravenous (1999)

    30/12/2021 Duración: 58min

Just as fans feared (or cheered) Shat The Movies slipping into a pattern of covering '90s blockbuster films, listener Ben in Japan commissioned "Ravenous" to close out the 2021 Shat calendar. This cannibal Western horror comedy set during the Mexican-American War is about as quirky as cinema gets: a soundtrack by Damon Albarn of Blur, a cartoonish mass murderer, gross-out humor mixed with slapstick giggles. But a killer cast including Guy Pearce, Robert Carlyle, David Arquette, Jeffrey Jones, Jeremy Davies, and Neal McDonough keeps "Ravenous" oddly accessible and strangely fun.  In this episode, the Shat Crew discusses the sounds of bagels and blowjobs, gross goatees, flashbacks that lack mystery, the danger of knives, the incredibly opportunity of being a wendigo in the Old West, and whether "Ravenous" is actually an allegory for repressed homosexuality.  SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW Android: http://shatthemovies.com/android Apple/iTunes: http://shatthemovies.com/itunes Social Media: http://shatthemovies.com/socia

  • In The Army Now (1994)

    28/12/2021 Duración: 01h07min

We dedicate this Shat The Movies episode to those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces and the people who love them. Oh, and Pauly Shore fans who feel horribly underserved by our existing catalog. You might think "In The Army Now" offends veterans of the Army and Army Reserve. It's irreverent, inaccurate, and inappropriate. But at least one Shat warfighter, The Colonel, finds it surprisingly ingenious.  Among the cheap gags, inexplicable plot holes, and strange takes on sexuality is a movie showcasing a young Andy Dick, a sorta hot (according to Ash) Pauly Shore, and a pre-"Tank Girl" Lori Petty. There are some smarts, like an "Of Mice and Men" allusion, and some flat-out funny scenes, like a hilarious attack on a Libyan SCUD site. How will the Shat Crew ultimately rule on this movie? The results surprised Gene Lyons. In this podcast, you'll also hear about Big D's experiences in Basic Training, Gene's regrets about not serving, and Ash's queries about the military's water filtration needs. We also cover

  • Titanic (1997)

    20/12/2021 Duración: 01h11min

Podcast releases don't get any bigger than this: A heroic band of listeners pulled together a special commission marking the massive milestone of 3 million Shat The Movies downloads on the 24th anniversary of the most epic film to hit theaters: "Titanic." There's no denying James Cameron's grand vision of capturing the Titanic's disastrous maiden voyage through a love story was a huge risk with a huge budget that broke box office records. But is it just a ghost ship with fond memories, or does Titanic's heart still go on? Ash is moved to tears. Big D spins up a theory on why Jack's responsible for the entire wreck. And Gene's love life gets supercharged by all the feels. This episode also includes Gene's story of why he guarded "Titanic" more closely than his virginity, Big D's moist recollection of the naked sketch scene, and Ash's celebration of Kate Winslet's beauty, despite Hollywood thinking the leading lady was overweight. Listen in for all this, plus the greatest Shat musical voicemail we've ever recei

  • Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)

    14/12/2021 Duración: 50min

Everyone knows about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it's time we gave the DC Animated Universe some love. "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" marked the first time DC put an animated feature into theaters, and it changed the way we'd see Batman on screen for years to come. This 1993 release was loosely based on the graphic novel "Batman: Year One" and trade paperback "Batman: Year Two," so it had Gene's attention. And Big D watched a lot of "The Animated Series" while stoned in college. Needless to say, the Shat Crew was excited to visit a Gotham City envisioned by Bruce Timm and voiced by Mark Hamill, Kevin Conroy, Dana Delany, Stacy Keach, and Abe Vigoda. In this episode, Gene and Big D cover lawn sex, Batman's detective roots, what a weak villain The Phantasm was, a weird romance, bad boy billionaires, the real motivation behind Bruce Wayne dressing as Batman, Alfred's horrid lot in life, the secret intelligence behind the Batcomputer, and flashbacks ... so many flashbacks. • Father of the Bride (1991)

    11/12/2021 Duración: 01h01min

Big D gets all the goosies while Gene and Ash beg fathers to see their daughters as adults in this review of Steve Martin's 1991 comedy "Father of the Bride."  Along the way, the Shat Crew discusses wedding costs, Martin Short, Subaru commercials, jewelry boxes, Keurig vs. Nespresso, paying attention to lyrics, Brazilian swimwear, the need for post-wedding brunch, and Diane Keaton.  Do you need to meet the parents before popping the question? Should you sell tickets to your wedding? When is it time for a father to let go? We tackle these questions and more in this week's episode that strangely ends in a discussion of "Top Gun: Maverick." • Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999)

    07/12/2021 Duración: 01h02min

Is everyone fair game when it comes to comedy? What if the person lampooning an oppressed group is a member of that group? Does it change if it's a mockumentary?  Listener Justin M. knew he was stirring up trouble when he commissioned 1999's "Drop Dead Gorgeous," a movie that looked at "Clueless" and said, "Hold my beer." Kirsten Dunst, Brittany Murphy, Denise Richards, Amy Adams, and Kirstie Alley had Ash and Big in tears with laughter. But Gene was just sad watching the film mock the poor, small-town folk, young women, the intellectually disabled, and people with eating disorders. In the debate, the Shat Crew also discussed gun culture, gross-out humor, and the original ending of "Drop Dead Gorgeous," which was much, much darker. • A League of Their Own (1992)

    30/11/2021 Duración: 01h05min

When a longtime listener requests a movie review for her 16th birthday, Shat delivers. This week's commission is the 1992 baseball classic "A League of Their Own." And while it shines as a comedy featuring some of the '90s hottest names and future stars, there's a little dust on this old reel. The sibling rivalry is a little overblown. The social commentary is a little dated. And the real women behind the tale are overshadowed by some seriously silly storylines. But that doesn't stop Penny Marshall's $100 million hit from being funny, fun, and absolutely memorable. Reel Spoilers podcast's Kevin R. Brackett joins the Shat Crew this week to talk about our first cars, "A League of Their Own" the TV series, the debutante system, a loss of manners, prison-yard rules, baseball safety, and whether Dottie threw the World Series. We also test out movie concepts starring Ash, including a post-apocalyptic Little League drama, and debate whether Bill Pullman's character, Bob, was a war hero or just lame. SUBSCRIBE &

  • Dutch (1991)

    25/11/2021 Duración: 01h04min

Thanksgiving movies are difficult to find, and quality Thanksgiving movies are even more elusive. Thankfully, listener Adam R. gifted us with the underrated 1991 road trip comedy "Dutch," an experience that revealed just how different your Shat hosts are in their approaches to children. Gene argues sometimes a kid needs to get punched in the mouth. Ash believes there no reason to hit your offspring, and Big D encourages tough love but draws the line at his mother's rug beater. Along the way, the Shat Crew cheers Christopher MacDonald, appreciates Ethan Embry, and questions whether "Dutch" is a great Ed O'Neill movie or just an OK John Hughes flick. We also discuss Gene's "horny shivers," Big D's teen virility, Christmas stress, how to help people in need, and Ash's first experience with porn. • The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)

    23/11/2021 Duración: 59min

In honor of listener Stephanie Q's beloved cat, Priscilla, we review an Australian film that put drag queens on the global stage and opened the door for Ash to educate Gene and Big D on "reading," "spilling tea," and "fishy queens." "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" gave cinema a visual spectacle, a new perspective on homophobia, incredible costumes, and tremendous performances by Hugo Weaving, Terence Stamp, and Guy Pearce. But it also telegraphed its big reveal, marginalized characters based on race and sex, and fell a bit flat in its finale. In this episode of Shat The Movies, Ash provides a history of drag and feminism. Gene declares that anyone doing a drag show while their bus is broken in the Outback deserves to die. And Big D goes on a pro-ABBA rampage while insisting everyone respect Gene's vagina. • Bull Durham (1986)

    16/11/2021 Duración: 01h08min

With more than 240 movies under our belts, Shat The Movies finally feels qualified to review the greatest sports film of all time: "Bull Durham." A young Tim Robbins, a sexy Kevin Costner, and a ripe Susan Sarandon do the unthinkable in this '80s classic: They surface the joy, sensuality, intelligence, passion, drama, and hard truths about baseball, a sport that's drifted into some very dull times. In this episode, Big D tells us what he believes in. Ash tells us about trying out for Little League, and Gene finds a new role model in Crash Davis. The Shat Crew also recall our favorite minor-league baseball memories and find one tiny flaw in this otherwise perfect film. • Stand By Me (1986)

    09/11/2021 Duración: 01h03min

Big D was so conflicted on his feelings toward "Stand By Me" that he took an extra 24 hours to process the Rob Reiner classic before delivering his verdict. It's not a fun movie, per se, but it generated some honest reflection from the Shat Crew. Gene was reminded of his childhood friendships, his relationship with The King Bee, and adventures along train tracks. Ash lamented Facebook's refusal to let high school acquaintances fade away, and Big D shared how seeing his first dead body changed his view on death.  Also on this episode, the trio discuss whether parents have favorite children, whether Stephen King is a one-trick pony, how to remove leeches, and a theory on Ace Merrill being turned into David Powers from "The Lost Boys." And finally, Ash confronts Big D about rumors he wants her off the podcast. • The Monster Squad (1987)

    03/11/2021 Duración: 01h03min

Shat listeners were appalled when we gave "The Goonies" more than two wipes. When they hear our "The Monster Squad" score, they might just try casting us into a demon dimension.  This '80s cult classic taught us what a pastiche was, illustrated how to explode a werewolf, and modeled perfect '80s parenting. We also enjoyed foul-mouthed kids, easy-to-remember character names, an outstanding montage, Dracula blowing up a treehouse with dynamite, and a corny thumbs-up that would make Van Damme blush.  Thanks to listener Christian in Perth, Western Australia, for giving us one more monster movie to celebrate spooky season. • Goodfellas (1990)

    29/10/2021 Duración: 01h02min

"Goodfellas" changed the game when it came to mob movies, taking us from the fantasy of mafia bosses to the much more mundane lives of foot soldiers. It showed how a man and a woman could be seduced by a criminal lifestyle. And it put Martin Scorsese's cinematic magic on full display. In this episode, the Shat Crew reveal their favorite scenes from the 1990 biopic and debate when exactly Henry Hill's life went from glamour to garbage. Also up for discussion are Robert De Niro's performance, when a rat isn't a rat, and whether the film's ending was rushed. And finally, we answer the question on everyone's mind: Is this movie better than "The Godfather: Part II?"
