The exile was almost over. Surely good times lay ahead! God gave Daniel a glimpse of the future, and it wasn't pretty. It contained persecution and "desolations." Well. Here we are. We woke up this morning in the Year of Our Lord 2,025. Did you think we would make it? It's a little surprising to me, I have to say. But God isn't surprised. Not fallowing is not following. Judah was taken into exile because of its idolatry, which doesn't surprise us. But there's another reason that God expelled the nation: they refused to follow His instructions for a 7-year sabbath of the farmland. There was more at issue than just nutrient replenishment of the soil. It was a question of who really owns that patch of earth, and whether He can be trusted to provide. We're still thinking about Daniel's Prayer. "For I know the plans that I have for you...." One of the most comforting promises in the Bible is found in Jeremiah 29: "'For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans for welfare and not for calamity, to give you a future and a hope.'" We know the verse, but do we know the context? It's right in the middle of Jeremiah's prophecy of a 70-year exile. Daniel was moved less by the general words of encouragement, and more by the math.
