As we continue our quarantine, some people want football back; some people want baseball back. So why not talk about a football game that went in only one direction in Wrigley Field (and no, we're not talking about a Hazell coached team when it comes to one-way football). Travis and Paul talk about the return of football to the Friendly Confines in 2010 when Northwestern hosted their in-state rival, Illinois. However, it had been a few decades since the last time a football game was held in Wrigley, and it turns out it could no longer host a football field with sufficient margins behind the end zones. Of course, since no one realized this until the week of the game, some special rules had to be introduced for this game. Though we still may be staying safer at home, there was some Purdue news over the past week. A few Purdue players were selected in the NFL Draft this weekend, Haarms announced he would transfer to BYU for his last year, and Nojel would test the NBA Draft waters to get some critical feedback before his senior season. Travis, Ledman, and Holmes (with non-helpful quips from Juan) talk about all of this as we finally have something Purdue related to talk about! Purdue Basketball this season has been a roller coaster, and this weekend's game at Northwestern summed up the season quite well. After struggling all season away from Mackey, and in the first 38-ish minutes in Evanston, Purdue pulled out a win at Northwestern, giving them their first conference road win of the season (yeah we know, it was at Northwestern). 23 years ago today, the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta kicked off, and they were...weird (hey, we're just living up to the name of our podcast). From constant product placements, single-use stadiums, and events being held by carvings of losers and racists from the Civil War. Oh, and did we mention the weird mascot, Izzy? With the Fourth of July this week and being in the thick of the MLB season, Travis and Paul reflect on baseball in the late-1800s, and some of the perils some players went through. Specifically, Moses Fleetwood Walker, one of the first black players in the league, and backlash he faced, especially from Chicago White Stockings player, Cap Anson (the White Stockings eventually became the Chicago Cubs). While often we discuss Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier, it was the presence of players like Fleetwood that led to the ban than Robinson eventually lifted.
