As we head into the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, water temperatures are abnormally warm. Those ocean temperatures were part of the conversation this week as NASA and NOAA announced - for the second straight month - the global set an all-time record for the hottest month ever recorded. This week on the Carolina Weather Group, James Brierton, Scotty Powell, and Frank Strait look at the tropics and hear from NASA as they make their climate announcement.

Monday's severe weather event caused storm damage in hundreds of places, but why was most of the damage not from tornadoes? It's typical that significant storm damage is associated with tornadoes, but in this case, straight-line winds from thunderstorms caused the damage. Severe thunderstorms are forecast to bring damaging winds to North Carolina and South Carolina today, Monday, August 7, 2023. The line of thunderstorms will feed off the day's 100+ degree heat index, which has prompted the National Weather Service to issue heat advisories across portions of the Carolinas. The storms are expected around 4 p.m. in the western North Carolina mountains, including in Asheville, Boone, and Blowing Rock. The storms will push eastward across the Carolinas and arrive in upstate South Carolina, including Spartanburg and Greenville, and Charlotte and Greensboro between 6 and 8 p.m. The storms are expected to remain strong as they move toward Raleigh and Columbia. Coastal locations, including Wilmington, the outer Banks, Myrtle Beach and Charleston, could see the lingering effects from these strong storms during the overnight hours into early Tuesday morning. There is a 30% chance of seeing damaging winds across much of the Carolinas. This has prompted the National Weather Service

No earlier than August 17, NASA and SpaceX intend to launch Crew-7 to the International Space Station from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Finally, a free lightning tool! NASA's Short-term Prediction Research and Transition Center (aka SPoRT) has released a new, interactive tool to help you track - and maybe, just maybe, predict - lightning. The map viewer, available at https://weather.ndc.nasa.gov/sport/li..., not only shows you where lightning is happening but how long since the last lightning strike. So no longer do you have to worry about keeping track of that last lightning strike before returning to the pool, beach, or soccer practice, this tool will let you know when that 30-minute window has elapsed. An EF-3 tornado, with winds at least 135 mph, caused damage across portions of Nash County, North Carolina Wednesday. Storm investigators from the National Weather Service office in Raleigh are on the ground in Nash and Edgecombe counties surveying the damage. A supercell tornado produced the tornado Wednesday. The National Weather Service is still working to confirm the distance the tornado was on the ground, but based on preliminary storm damage assessments, the tornado was on the ground for several miles. Officials are still working to determine the extent of storm damage, which in the immediate aftermath caused extensive damage to a Pfizer building and a still undetermined number of businesses and homes. Additional storms and severe weather are forecast in both North Carolina and South Carolina, with most of the Carolinas in a 2% chance of seeing a tornado, based on the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center Outlook. Severe storms Monday will bring the threat of damaging wind, hail, and isolated tornadoes to both North Carolina and South Carolina. The threat of sever weather has prompted the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center to issue an Enhanced Risk (tier 3 out of 5) for much of the Carolinas. The biggest severe weather threat will be damaging winds and hail, but a few isolated storms could also produce tornadoes and localized flash flooding.

The Pope Road fire in Brunswick County North Carolina continues to burn. The N. C. Forest Service Red Incident Management Team has assumed command of the Pulp Road Fire as of this morning. Today firefighters will be transitioning from active firing operations within the Green Swamp Nature Preserve to mopping up the fire’s edge. Weather: A super fog event occurred overnight causing extremely low visibilities during the morning commute. A weak front will linger in the region through Monday with isolated showers and thunderstorms possible. A sea breeze from the southeast will increase winds in the afternoon and create gusts of 10-15 miles per hour. Rainfall chances increase Tuesday and Wednesday. Lingering smoke may have potential to mix with fog. Acreage: 16,000 acres; Containment: 0%; Personnel and Equipment: 81 total personnel Yesterday the firefighters continued firing operations and brought the fire to the edge of Highway 211 as planned. Thursday, June 15, firefighting personnel completed strategic firing operations to eliminate hazardous unburned fuels outside the fire area. Crews also mopped up some significant spotovers along Richardson Road. Firefighting personnel will continue strategic firing operations into the weekend while weather conditions allow. Significant smoke is expected for communities in and surrounding Brunswick County. Areas surrounding the Green Swamp Nature Preserve and northeast of Wilmington will experience the heaviest smoke impacts. Highway 17 and other corridors could be impacted with substantial smoke, resulting in low visibility and challenging travel conditions overnight and into Saturday. In the interest of safety, residents and commuters may want to consider allowing for extra travel time or plan to take alternate routes. The N.C.

The air quality in the Carolinas is so poor Wednesday that officials have issued a Code Red, a type of air quality alert that encourages everyone to consider limiting prolonged exposure outside. Those especially sensitive to air pollution, including people with asthma, should avoid outdoor exercise altogether. The Carolina Weather Group's James Brierton discusses the poor air quality, and the weather pattern making this possible, with WCNC Charlotte Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich. Dr. Phil Klotzbach is back on the Carolina Weather Group to explain why he and the famed Colorado State University hurricane forecast predict a slightly below-average storm activity in the Atlantic Ocean this hurricane season. They are forecasting 13 named storms, down from the average of 14.4 They expect 6 hurricanes, down from the average of 7.2. Dr. Klotzbach expects 2 major hurricanes of Category 3 or greater, which is down from 3.2. Current neutral ENSO conditions look fairly likely to transition to El Niño this summer/fall. However, there is considerable uncertainty as to how strong an El Niño would be, if it does develop. Sea surface temperatures in the eastern and central Atlantic are much warmer than normal, so if a robust El Niño does not develop, the potential still exists for a busy Atlantic hurricane season. Larger-than-normal uncertainty exists with this outlook. We anticipate a near-average probability for major hurricanes making landfall along the continental United States coastline and in the
