Traffic (2000)
13/05/2021 Duración: 24minIn which we talk about one man's continued hatred for films in The Criterion Collection. When faced with a film tackling the war on drugs... what do the hosts of TRILOGY IN THEORY focus on? A teenage addiction to SUNCOAST VIDEO. Being ashamed to take one's kid brother to Steven Soderbergh's slightly more enjoyable film OUT OF SIGHT. And of course nitpicking the poster of this box-office and Oscar winning ensemble film aimed at adults with serious subject matter now relegated to television miniseries. STILL... not a one sheet worthy of a college dorm room wall. Ultimately we talk about the things that matter. Aliens (1986)
05/05/2021 Duración: 30minIn which we praise sequels... the few that are good. We kick off a new month of a TRILOGY IN THEORY by starting in the middle of the story, specifically with James Cameron's ALIENS. Taking over for Ridley Scott (something we decree to happen again! thank you, ALIEN: COVENANT box-office...) this time we find Ripley as the woman in the room who knows more than the men making decisions... and look what good that does her. Along the way one host wonders if this is the film that made his decision on parenthood (it stinks!) and the other host (who made the mistake of procreating) swears that there is still time in the day for DVD special features. No one believes him. Directors Repeating Themselves
01/05/2021 Duración: 38minNever before have you heard anyone repeat themselves on a podcast. Right? We never promised to break new ground on TRILOGY IN THEORY... which means we are very comfortable with a theme on directors repeating prior works in their filmography with a trilogy of CLERKS 2, DRAG ME TO HELL and BOYHOOD. Kevin Smith, Sam Raimi and Richard Linklater had no fear of proper critics taking them to task for running out of ideas... but it's safe to say they didn't expect this podcast to hold them accountable. But today is that day. The lack of creativity ends now, filmmakers. Leave that where it belongs. On movie podcasts. Boyhood (2014)
26/04/2021 Duración: 26minIn which one host learns just what those crazy teenagers have been up to all these years. Never before has a Criterion Collection been more educational than when one host was appalled to learn about... underage drinking. More revelations would follow as we discussed Richard Linklater's BOYHOOD but also some accusations. Such as... Does the boy in BOYHOOD actually know how to read? Is he REALLY a fan of the Harry Potter series or just a POSER? And finally... is he more attractive than the character of ANGUS? You know... the hefty fellow in that charming family film that gave James Van Der Beek his start. And a grateful nation thanked Mr. Linklater for adding another masterpiece to the wing of adolescence angst. THE 400 BLOWS. VARSITY BLUES. BOYHOOD! Drag Me To Hell (2009)
19/04/2021 Duración: 24minIn which we judge an old lady for judging Alison Lohman. It's a tradition on TRILOGY IN THEORY (and in particular this month) to rewatch films that are decidedly unpleasant. Sam Raimi does not disappoint in that regard as he returned to his roots of gross-out gags and humorous horror and boy do we feel sorry for Alison Lohman for being the recipient of all those shenanigans in DRAG ME TO HELL. We feel so sorry that both hosts make a solemn vow to Never. Watch. This. Movie. Again. But we are asking you to listen to this episode. And also no promises are made about not purchasing this movie in a different format. Clerks 2 (2006)
11/04/2021 Duración: 33minIn which we express concern for Rosario Dawson's love life. On this podcast there is one Dante and one Randal... and absolutely no Rosario Dawson around. Kevin Smith kicks off our trilogy of returns with his return to CLERKS 2 and we find that much like the film itself, coming back to these characters changes with age. But we still feel bad for Rosario Dawson. Really bad. Ending in Failure.... and Loving It! (Dr. Strangelove, The Player and Freddy vs. Jason)
02/04/2021 Duración: 53minThis Will Be A Pleasant Bit of Unpleasantness. Whenever a podcast opens with a Monty Python sketch... show notes must come in to apologize to our dear listeners. And also to assure them that it will end. It will all end. We celebrate another three months of trilogies in theory by going back to our opening to 2021 with End of the World Speeches... only this time Stanley Kubrick finally gets off the bench with his first selection to this podcast in DR. STRANGELOVE: OR HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE THE BOMB. Then it's Robert Altman's turn with THE PLAYER stepping in as an alternate take on our previous The Love of Movies Brought to Life trilogy. And finally in the company of Kubrick and Altman is naturally Ronny Yu with his equally established classic FREDDY VS. JASON. All of this is to say PLEASE stick around after the Monty Python bit. Thank you and the host writing these show notes apologizes. Truly. His name is Mike. He's a good guy. Web, also known as The Other Guy... is not. Support what we do wi

Movies Versus Movies
29/03/2021 Duración: 31minIn which we want movies to stop fighting with each other. And so they do! For this is the wrap-up to our versus trilogy which includes so much hyper-masculinity that it this episodes has no choice but to be our most sexual. Woody Harrelson as a pornographer freedom fighter in THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT! Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck dismissing the pillow talk and getting down to man and alien grappling in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE! And Christian Bale receiving a llama bite from Matt Damon in FORD V FERRARI! Hot. Ford v Ferrari (2019)
22/03/2021 Duración: 33minIn which two film dorks DON'T talk cars. FORD v FERRARI was known as The Great Dad Movie of 2019. Well, one of your hosts is a father and he took offense. The other host finds kids offensive but bad movie takes on Twitter even worse. So we get our revenge! Taking on the world that apparently hated this 92% Rotten Tomatoes score, Academy Award Best Picture nominee... if by the world you mean tweets. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
10/03/2021In which we release our Ultimate Edition Snyder Cut of something shorter. Much shorter. Don't @ us #ReleaseTheSnyderCut. But thanks for the download! In this episode we explore more ugliness in movies vs... reason and logic. Oh and also BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE... a film where having a conversation is mostly ignored for more glowering (and in the case of Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor that's probably a wise course of action) naturally two podcasters choose to misunderstand this hyper-aggressive version of children's toys and and one host just wishes for a little more banter with Alfred the butler. However the other host (the one for the home team of DORKS) chose to record while wearing a Batman t-shirt, so he gets it. Mostly. He'd like to. But he doesn't seem to like this movie much. But he bought it. Warner Bros wins. The end. Until inevitably more on HBO Max... The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996)
04/03/2021 Duración: 28minIn which we discover that free speech is unpleasant. And also we have dirty minds. But the blame does not lie with us. Oh no, dear listeners! For the crafting of devious young thoughts we must give credit where credit is due. To one of the greatest Kentuckians who had the pleasure of being played by a man who likes getting arrested in the Bluegrass State. And if that's not enough... the better host on this podcast is recording this very podcast...in...Kentucky. Not merely because he already lives there. It's because that is true commitment to our episode on THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT! The other host just edits the show but made the crucial error to not write these show notes. Enjoy. The Love of Movies Brought to Life
24/02/2021 Duración: 29minIn which we conclude that GET SHORTY is the end of cinema. Woody Allen is a controversial figure in film... but also has had a professional life of much critical acclaim. Quentin Tarantino may have a bit of an ego in that massive head of his. And with good reason! He also has lived the life of a critical darling since arriving on the scene with RESERVOIR DOGS. So when you have a trilogy on a love of movies brought to life that includes Allen's THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO and Tarantino's INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS there is only one conclusion you can make. That Barry Sonnenfeld's GET SHORTY is the only film worth discussing. This is the end of Trilogy in Theory. Good night. Inglourious Basterds (2009)
20/02/2021 Duración: 36minIn which we apologize to the Giant Face for being late... ...on the other hand it's probably not a bad idea to be late to INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS considering what Mélanie Laurent has in store for filmgoers. As we wrap up this trilogy on movie lovers we primarily talk about the expectations for this Quentin Tarantino film upon release and also now as he has continued with his alternate history shtick. Brad Pitt as the ultimate bad-ass in the QT cinematic universe? Starts here. Christoph Waltz with the constant sass? Also here. One host's love for Tom Brady? Unfortunately for the other host... yes, that's in this episode too. Get Shorty (1995)
11/02/2021 Duración: 23minIn which we love tall women and hate short men. During the post-PULP FICTION renaissance of John Travolta came him playing yet another charmer in the professional field of crime. Only thing time his character in GET SHORTY shared our love of movies. Which means all of his crimes can be forgiven. In fact... most everything in this Barry Sonnenfield adaptation of an Elmore Leonard novel can be forgive (even Danny Devito as the world's biggest movie star) because the cast is so damn likable. James Gandolfini as the stunt man with a heart of gold. Delroy Lindo as the nemesis who likes purple suits and pink toilets. And the leading lady of the 90s and currently criminally underutilized Rene Russo. This was fun. You will have fun. Happy Valentine's Day weekend at the movies from TRILOGY IN THEORY! The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985)
04/02/2021 Duración: 26minIn which we fall in love with Jeff Daniels of DUMB AND DUMBER. The premise of Woody Allen's THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO was too hard for your hosts to resist as it leads us to a discussion of choosing the real world or a life in the movies. (And yes, we promise no MATRIX discussion this episode...) However it wouldn't be TRILOGY IN THEORY without some self-loathing: Is heartbreak necessary to make a truly great love story? Mia Farrow's fragility is sweet to one host and scary to the other. And can we only approach the magical realism entries in Allen's filmography? (Shameless promotion time: our MIDNIGHT IN PARIS episode is our #2 most listened to blockbuster. Freaks.) Enjoy our our failed attempt at a movie podcast for the Valentine's Day holiday before our listeners presumably go on to succeed on this most loathsome holiday! End of the World Speeches
01/02/2021 Duración: 30minIn which we pick out nice words (the best words as a loser FORMER President once said) for the end of the world. Look, it wasn't enough to just survive 2020. To celebrate moving from one tough year to what looks like a marginally less tough year in 2021 we recruit some of our most charismatic screen icons to talk about endings... and hopefully new beginnings. Mainly we just want an excuse for Ed Harris, Virginia Madsen and George Clooney to talk at us. Okay, so maybe not so much Mr. Harris. He's scary. We're not. Enjoy as we wrap-up our TRILOGY IN THEORY on THE TRUMAN SHOW, SIDEWAYS and UP IN THE AIR! Up in the Air (2009)
26/01/2021 Duración: 35minIn which one host finally gives George Clooney a chance. The disrespect to the great state of Kentucky continues as our most handsome candidate is FINALLY off the waitlist for one co-host while the other jeopardizes his marriage with trivia about stunt butts for Vera Farmiga in UP IN THE AIR. We assume this is the type of commentary that Jason Reitman expected in his film about rising unemployment released in the shadow of an economic crisis in America and blah blah blah Anna Kendrick has the cutest cry that... We. Have. Ever. Seen. 2021 is here. Things are looking up. If not we will continue to look up to old-fashioned movie star vehicles and be sad with very beautiful people. Enjoy! Sideways (2004)
13/01/2021Two Guys Who Love SIDEWAYS But Not Wine No expertise to be had on this episode for Alexander Payne's SIDEWAYS. Oh sure, both your hosts have revisited this film many times. One of them fondly remembers experiencing its charms while eating a frozen pizza. So it shouldn't surprise any of you that neither man on this podcast is a wine snob. Or even drinks the stuff. Though I assure you that we do drink. Probably not as much as we should the way things have been going. ANYWAY the movie is great and Virginia Madsen delivers an ALL TIMER of a speech and just thinking of the shenanigans that Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church get into makes the poor bastard typing out these show notes want to watch it all over again. The Truman Show (1998)
07/01/2021 Duración: 33minThe Truman Show is depressing. Thank the maker for Jim Carrey though! As we discuss on this episode it takes a light touch to navigate the murky ethical waters of THE TRUMAN SHOW. Thankfully Peter Weir cast a comedian for this part written by Andrew Niccol and what results is a very entertaining film that the Academy could safely ignore. Because it was entertaining! On this episode your hosts about how it could have all gone wrong and that includes placing themselves in the role of Truman resulting in a show that no one would watch. Which is why we podcast.
