  • Episode 567.5: Trusting In Our Perfect Imperfection with Guy Macpherson, PhD

    13/12/2021 Duración: 23min

I've been doing this podcast now for a few years and I continue to love it. I love it because I get to speak with incredible people who have dedicated their lives to helping those who've been impacted by trauma. One of the things that inspires me during these interviews is when I learn about that element or experience or journey that served to compel my guest to do this work. This usually has little to do with trauma interventions or techniques, and more about the period of time when my guests realize that the path of healing involves the recognition of humanity--within themselves as well as their client's. In this episode I share a bit about my own struggles during my time in graduate school, and feeling as though I needed to hide behind knowledge while all along refusing to trust myself and simply be myself and of how I was able to turn that around. ---Guy Macpherson, PhD, is a husband, a father of two, and holds a doctorate in clinical psychology. In 2014, while working at a clinic in Northern Californi

Women were cutting themselves, bingeing and purging huge quantities of food, and abusing drugs and alcohol. As she continued to listen she learned that somehow these self-harming behaviors were “helping” individuals to escape intolerable emotional states. They were shifting their mood from flooding anxiety to numbing deadness, or vice versa.Because these behaviors were so helpful they were compulsively repeated and often became addictions.
