The sixth day of track and field at the Olympics was another huge one for Team USA! Quincy Hall claimed the 400m gold medal while Kenneth Rooks shocked the world with a silver medal finish in the 3000m steeplechase. As the events roll on, it’s clear that the American athletes are making a big splash and setting the stage for an exciting finish to the Games. In tonight’s edition of the Torch Talk, the team breaks down… – Quincy Hall won the Olympic gold in the 400m at Paris 2024 in 43.40, making him the 4th-fastest man ever. Brit Matthew Hudson-Smith took bronze and Muzala Samukonga of Zambia took bronze. This was the fastest 400m race in history, as five men dipped under 44 seconds. – Soufiane El Bakkali became the first man in nearly 100 years to successfully defend his Olympic steeplechase gold, winning with a time of 8:06.05. Kenneth Rooks won silver with a big PB, and Abraham Kibiwot of Kenya won bronze. – Nina Kennedy won the women's pole vault at the Paris 2024 Olympics, clearing a height of 4.90m.

We had the pleasure of briefly chatting with Jamaica's Kishane Thompson just two days after he took silver in the men's 100m final at the Paris Olympics. It was the first medal by a Jamaican man in the men's 100m at the Games since Usain Bolt. This is also Thompson's first Olympic Games. It was a dramatic men's 100m final and ehen the results were finally made official, they showed that Noah Lyles ran 9.784 and Thompson ran 9.789. This was the first Olympic 100m final to be decided by thousandths-of-a-second since Allen Wells and Silvio Leonard both ran 10.25 in Moscow 1980. Day five of track and field at the Paris Olympics may have been the most electric day yet! We saw an epic finish in the men’s 1500m with Cole Hocker taking the victory and Jakob Ingebrigtsen falling short of the podium. Meanwhile, Gabby Thomas won her first-ever Olympic title in the 200m. From Mondo Duplantis resetting his own world record (yet again) to the chaos of Faith Kipygeon being disqualified and later reinstated as the women’s 5000m silver medallist, today was a memorable one. In tonight’s edition of Torch Talk, we dive into all of the highlights from another action-packed day… – Mondo Duplantis broke the pole vault world record for the ninth time in his career en route to winning his second straight Olympic gold in the event. Sam Kendricks took silver after clearing 5.95m, and Emmanouil Karalis finished in bronze with 5.90m. – Beatrice Chebet took home Olympic gold in a chaotic women’s 5000m race in 14:28.56. Today’s excitement was off the charts! Day three’s events were a rollercoaster of thrills, but stealing the spotlight was the men’s 100m final – a race that had fans across the world on the edge of their seats from start to finish. In today’s edition of Torch Talk, we recap… – Noah Lyles wins the first Olympic gold of his career by taking the 100m crown over Jamaica's Kishane Thompson. Both men ran 9.79 and the gold was decided by thousandths-of-a-second. "When I quit after college, I genuinely thought, ‘That's it. Georgia Bell and I connected after she just ran 3:56.54 at the Monaco Diamond League to become the second-fastest British woman of all time over 1500m. She had shared that she’s a fan of the show and I’ve been following her story closely this season and it’s remarkable.  She quit track seven years ago after finishing up her college eligibility at Cal – but after dabbling in the duathlon, she decided to make a comeback this year. “For me, the most important thing is practicing winning and practicing trying to win. Because at the end of the day, PRs are awesome and running super fast is great, but people aren’t going to say, ‘Oh, well, 9:03 is the third fastest time.’ They’re going to say ‘Val won,’ right? And so for me, I just want to try to win. That’s all I care about. I don’t even care if we run slow because I just want to win.” Valerie Constien was on the show about two months ago so if you haven’t heard that episode, I think it sets thighs up perfectly for more context on her comeback from a torn ACL last year. I enjoyed hearing from the listeners that they felt more invested in Val’s comeback and were overjoyed to see her running well at the Prefontaine Classic and at the Trials knowing more about her. Whittni Morgan had a little bit of delayed gratification as she was named to the U.S. Olympic team in the 5000m about a week after the Trials. So how did it happen? Elle St. Pierre won the 5000m and finished third in the 1500m but has decided to only run the 1500m at the Paris Olympics. This elevated Parker Valby into that final spot for the 5000m after her fourth place finish in the Olympic Trials final. Valby also finished second in the 10,000m. After a few days of consideration and conversation with her coaches Will Palmer and Samantha Palmer, she decided to just run the 10,000 meters at the Paris Olympics. She qualified for that event based off her World Ranking. This meant that Whittni Morgan, who finished fifth in the 5000m final, got the final spot for Paris.
