No Laying Up - Golf Podcast

Rob Collins from King Collins Golf Course design joins us again to tell the Sweetens Cove story from the top. The little nine hole course with a shed for a clubhouse has become a cult favorite, and now features a celebrity packed ownership group, but it was many years of challenges, blood, sweat, and many tears before that became the reality. Rob takes us on this journey, and updates us on his latest project (Landmand) in Nebraska, a new site for The Buck Club, and a lot more. "The Match" returns, pitting the Big Cat and Peyton against Phil and Tom Brady this Sunday at Medalist. In our preview show, presented by DraftKings, we talk with Jeff Neubarth, the producer of The Match, about what to expect with the television product, JT, Barkley, the carts, the mics, and a lot more. On the back end, we share our thoughts on the format, whose partner we'd rather be, Brady and Manning as pro golfers, handicaps, and a ton more. This was fun, and we're pumped for this thing to kick off. 

Live golf is back! We recap Sunday's skins game, from Seminole, to the golf played, to the positives and negatives of the entertainment product. We take some questions from listeners, discuss the upcoming PGA Tour challenges, Vijay Singh, and a lot more.

We dove into the annals of history to each find a past event that featured some special carnage. We detail where things went wrong (or right, depending on how you look at it) in course setups, the high scores that ensued, the funny occurrences, and of course the classic quotes. The events include the 2004 US Open, the 2017 Bahamas Great Exuma Classic, the 1901 US Open, the 1979 Players Championship, and the 1999 Open Championship. This was a lot of fun. 

The 2003 Masters champion joins us to talk about the lessons he learned from playing with Tiger at the '99 PGA, his many Q-school attempts before breaking through, golf in Canada, the Champions Dinner, stack and tilt, how injuries derailed his career, turning 50, and his future on the Champions Tour. 

We each went our separate ways, researched a topic we wanted to talk about, and presented it to the group, show and tell style. Neil tackled Bryson's alarming weight gain, DJ takes us on a history tour of Pebble Beach, Soly goes deep on the OWGR, Tron explores future possibilities for the European Tour, and Big Randy tells us about the 2010 Crystal Downs Club Championship. 

Webb Simpson joins for the first time, and we go deep on his golf swing, the Birdman, texting Tom Watson, his golf swing, the belly putter, and a ton more. Webb talks about how different it is trying to close out tournaments now compared to a decade ago, some of the other highlights and lowlights of his career, playing with Bubba in Ryder Cups, playing with Reed at Royal Melbourne, and what his games are like at home. This one is going to be a bit more controversial. Who has gotten more love for resumes that might be a little light? We have a lot of different definitions of "overappreciated", and we fleshed these out over and hour and half, and narrowed it down to five overappreciated guys in golf history. You're not going to like some of the names thrown out. 

The names Nicklaus, Palmer, Jones, Snead, Sarazen, Tiger, and Phil all roll off the tongue easily when talking about some of the legends of the game. But who are some of the more underappreciated players in the game, both past and present? We each make our case for three guys, and ultimately decide on five underappreciated players. Some are names you might expect to hear on this list, and some may surprise you. This was a lot of fun. Next up, overappreciated! 

The mental side of golf is complicated, but Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott have set out to make it easier to understand and comprehend. Their book "Be a Player" is a great guide towards gaining confidence on the golf course. We don't do a lot of game improvement stuff on this podcast, but Soly swears that he cut measurable strokes off his game just by going through the exercises that this book lays out. Soly chats with Pia and Lynn about the concepts in the book, and there's plenty of information here that will help you play better golf. Thanks a ton to both Pia and Lynn for the time. 

Patrick Cantlay rose quickly through the amateur ranks, and burst onto the professional golf scene as a young amateur before leaving UCLA. He then encountered adversity on top of adversity with injury and personal tragedy, and has clawed his way back inside the top-10 in the world. He takes us through the near career-ending back injury, how he's still dealing with that today, Augusta National, the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne, playing for Tiger Woods, his comments that were caught by hot mics at Kapalua, and so much more. 

The PGA Tour is scheduled to return at the Charles Schwab Challenge in June, and we discuss the new schedule, the downstream effects, what golf is going to look like when it comes back, and a lot more. Plus we take your voicemails on HR related issues, handicaps, captain's picks, and a bunch more.

In Part I of our deep dive, we go through Tiger's major championship history from his amateur days, to the triumph at Augusta in '97, the Tiger Slam, and into 2001. We put each win into perspective, and touch on his close and not so close calls in between. We also highlight some often forgotten moments of these majors, the "contenders," the great media quotes, and a ton more. This episode went way longer than we anticipated, so it's divided up over two parts. Stay tuned for Part II coming Tuesday.
