The Special Envoy for Children, Kim Simplis Barrow has endorsed a program called Girls Fly. After her first experience in Belize, the organizer of Girls Fly, Gael Sylvia made a heartfelt commitment to showcase the experiences of women in Belize. Sylvia has returned to Belize and she expects that ten thousand girls and women will be equally touched by the program. Standard four, five and six students in the Belize District will be the first to experience Girls Fly from June twenty fourth through June twenty ninth. We see an opportunity to connect the demand for fresh, healthy, and local food with the abundance -- and incredible diversity -- of what our farmers are producing here on the Central Coast. We are a group of community members that have been volunteering our time to take the concept and vision of a local food co-op through the development stages from organizing to opening of the store. The process is quite natural and straight forward, many guidebooks and toolkits exist, but nothing can save us from the experience and reward of organizing our community to meet its own needs. This week, I am geeked to be interviewing Caribbean feminist activist Malaika Brooks-Smith-Lowe! Malaika is a Grenadian contemporary artist/activist and co-founder of Groundation Grenada. Her interdisciplinary approach to social change also includes yoga instruction at Spice Harmony Yoga Studio Grenada, which she runs with her family, and agricultural development and education work through The Grenada Goat Dairy Project. Malaika's artistic inquiry is fueled by her engagement with community along these varying but interlinked pathways.
