Land & Legacy - Maximizing Useable Space On Your Property
09/07/2019 Duración: 58minIt's not always about the number of acres you have to manage, but more about the useable space on the property. This could also be understood as suitable acres for bobwhite quail habitat. The bobwhite quail is not a generalist species like whitetail deer, they require specific habitat to be able to survive and reproduce, without it present quail will be extremely limited. In this podcast, we sit down with Kyle and Frank our bobwhite quail consulting biologist to better understand the foundation of quail or upland land management. Without this base of understanding, the finer details and requirements are null and void. Useable space for bobwhite quail consists of bare ground, woody/shrubby cover, and forbs. These components have to be present on the landscape for quail to persist. The layout and spatial distribution of these key elements are critical as well to survival and high reproduction rates. We hope you enjoy this podcast and continue to learn how to manage the land to promote species like the bobwhit

Transition Wild - Setting Up Your Bow For Western Hunting with Jake Bell
05/07/2019 Duración: 01h13minToday I’m joined by my friend Jake Bell who is a super knowledgeable bow technician in Colorado. We talk all things related to archery setups and dialing in your bow for western big game hunting. When chasing elk in unforgiving mountain terrain, your bow has to be bomb proof and Jake talks about the things we can do to prepare and to ensure our equipment doesn't fail in the field or let us down during the moment of truth. Elk and mule deer are bigger animals than your average whitetail and sometimes the shot distances can be further, so we cover arrow weight, spine, FOC, and tuning your bow to maximize kinetic energy. We also talk about beginner archery and the process Jake goes through to set up a new hunter with a bow and how things like brace height and axle to axle measurements matter. We cover a bunch of technical aspects of compound bows and how small adjustments can make big differences. Lastly, we cover archery form, the overall shot process, and some tips to make you a more confident hunter and arch

Southern Ground - Local Legends Series - Peter Updike
05/07/2019 Duración: 01h07minPart 3 of the Local Legends series was very special. On the line, Parker is talking with author, public land advocate, & Florida native, Peter Updike. Being raised around the Ocala National Forest, Peter started hunting at an early age. Parker and Peter discuss the early years of his hunting career, and the passion that he developed to chase whitetails around the public woods of Florida. It’s no secret that Florida is not known for it’s large deer population or for producing quality bucks. However, this is the place that Peter calls home. In this day and age it’s not uncommon to hear hunters complain about the state they are in. “The deer population just isn’t great around here”. If you’re apart of any hunting forums, you hear that often. Peter doesn’t have that excuse. In fact, he loves the fact that hunting is difficult. “It just makes success that much better”, he says. Mr. Updike documented his experiences in his book titled, “Wild Treasures Of An Outdoorsman”. In this book, Peter talks about what our pu

Land & Legacy - Next Level Habitat - Shrubs
02/07/2019 Duración: 56minTime to step up the game of habitat! No more messing around, here are the nuts and bolts or foundation piece of land management to maximize the benefit for wildlife. Shrubs play a critical role in offering benefit on the landscape 24/7 or 365 days a year. Trees and grasses tend to get the glory when it comes to habitat management, but we forgot about the middle ground. Shrubs come into play for non-game birds, game birds, rabbits, grouse, quail, turkey, whitetail deer, and more. Shrub thickets provide forage during the spring, summer, fall, and winter as well as cover. There isn't a downside to shrubs. Every region has shrubs that should play a major role in the habitat. Don't move forward in your habitat management plan without considering shrubs. Do your research and plant the shrubs that are missing in your landscape. The wildlife will thank you later. 25/06/2019 Duración: 55minTime to recap the topic! Last week we discussed the difference and similarities between hinge cutting and clear-cutting. Both types of techniques do benefit wildlife, but the question we have set out to answer is do they provide the same value? This last podcast caused come hype on social media, so we are here to revisit the topic with some outside advice from Matt Ross of the QDMA. In this podcast, Matt discusses in full length from his background as a forester, hunter, and QDM practitioner the differences between clear-cutting and hinge-cutting, especially in northern climates. Matt shares what to expect and how wildlife will be effected after each technique. hinge-cutting is a highly debated practice, but has it's place! We hope that this follow-up podcast further explains our thoughts revolving around these timber and wildlife management practices. Thanks for listening
